You can use woodchips or anything that will burn to do the same thing. The gasifier creates lots of smoke by not allowing enough oxygen to get the fire going really good. The engine will run on smoke easily, the issues with it are getting the mix right so it isnt too rich or too lean, its a trial and error sort of thing. Mother Earth News did it with a late 60s C10 back in the mid 70s, the truck had a stovebolt in it and a 3 on the tree, and would run on gas or woodchips.
Think about how many coffee grounds go in the trash every day all over the world. That is LOTS of fuel. You can also make ethanol with them if you can get enough since the beans are mostly starch.
Pretty cool stuff.

Dad is always bringing up the Germans in WWII using gasifiers to fuel cars. It's kinda neat. There's a book out there discussing creating your own charcoal and making lawn mower gas at the same time, maybe a Dave Gingery book, I need to order it some time.
