  • "EVERYBODY'S DOING IT " Organized Cheating with Hemi Racers

There was a lot of speculation as to why there wasn’t the annual SS/AH race at the just completed Mopars at the Strip in Las Vegas. The problem evidently was related to the Hemi cylinder heads used on those cars.

A check with an NHRA source (who asked not to be named because of ongoing negotiations) told the Agent that over the years the racers have made enough minor incremental improvements that cumulatively have pushed the envelope of a legal cylinder head. NHRA realized almost all of the SS/AH racers had heads that were no longer legal. But, rather than force most of the SS/AH racers to scrap their current heads and buy new ones, the rules were rewritten for 2013 making most of heads the racers are currently using legal, which would include heads from Ray Barton and the Westtech shop.

One Hemi racer, who also declined to be named, said his budget would now jump from $250,000 a year to $350,000 just to stay in the middle of the pack this year. This same racer told the Agent: "It feels to me like the NHRA is rewarding the cheaters, the ones that have gotten away with worse cheater heads for years now have a head start on the rest us."

Hmmm.... I know for sure that the SS/AH heads have been gone over by NHRA officials with a fine tooth comb every season. "Cheating for years" seems more like "we just noticed a few shops being creative"

Meanwhile, for the people complaining, those head mods are NOT an extra $100,000 a season. And they just got told how to improve their program - they shouldn't be complaining for the free instructions on how to go faster.

NHRA had a choice legalliize the heads and therefore keep most of the racers in the class, or boot the lot and lose many of the competitors in the process. In short, they decided to fold in order to keep the class strong. They chose money over honor and integrity. They chose badly.

That makes it OK? If all but one competitor was using illegal heads, does it make the rule nonexistent?

The fact is they chose money over morals. They are not setting a good example or standard.

NHRA(I LOVE DRAG RACING) has always chosen the money and have rarely put it back into the actual racing program, but into the "show". they have done great things for drag racing while being really "one way". mho
Maybe I can clear this up.....I thought the cop was a prostitute.

NHRA Technical Department Announces 2014 SS/AH Cylinder Head Rules

In February of this year, the NHRA Technical Department adjusted the rules concerning cylinder heads in the SS/AH class for the 2013 season to more accurately reflect the types of cylinder heads currently being used in competition. This rule change was made in an effort to avoid the immediate cost and inconvenience to racers of purchasing new cylinder heads for the 2013 season.

Since the release of these rule amendments, the NHRA Technical Department has been in conversations with the Super Stock racing community. As a result of these discussions, the NHRA Technical Department will revert back to the 2012 Super Stock cylinder head rules beginning with the 2014 season. The NHRA Technical Department feels that changing these rules back to their 2012 level for SS/AH is consistent with:

Continuation and future growth of the SS/AH class
Alignment of Super Stock rules for all classes
Preservation of the spirit and intent of a unique vehicle in Drag Racing History
Racers to be able to easily obtain factory correct components which will be tuned and modified within existing rules (not redesigned) to maximize performance capability
Maintaining the architecture of the components as designed
Taking this step in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary celebration of the 426 Gen II Hemi in 2014 (introduced in Feb, 1964)

Delaying the new rule implementation until 2014 will allow racers time to make the necessary changes to their vehicles to be in compliance. The 2014 SS/AH cylinder head rules will not permit external modifications, cutting into any part of the valve cover bolt hole and the valve cover bolt holes must remain unaltered and in their original location.

                          NHRA
                          Vice President Technical Operations

Rule adjustment is just for 2013 and will revert to 2012 rules in 2014.

The N.H.R.A. as really changed a great deal over the years and it's just my opinion but many of the changes have not been very good ones over the past few years since new owners took over.

To me it seems they only care about the Pro Classes.
