  • GM Trademarks Chevelle Name

    Rumors that General Motors could resurrect the famous Chevelle name on a new vehicle have been around for a while now, and the latest news coming from GM Authority says this might actually happen.

    According to our source, GM has applied for the Chevelle trademark late last year, filing it under the "Exterior badges for vehicles" category of Good and Services. The application is not yet finalized, now being published for opposition under the "Non-Final Action - Mailed" status.

    Applying for the Chevelle trademark doesn't necessarily mean that we'll get to see a Chevy bearing the legendary name, but rumors suggest that it could be either a Chevrolet SS replacement or a new performance coupe bigger than the Camaro.

    The Chevrolet Chevelle was build between 1964 and 1977 as a mid-size vehicle in several body styles. The 1970 7.4-liter Big-Block V8-powered Chevelle SS is widely known as one of the most powerful musclecars ever built.

      I'm guessing that trademarking "Chevelle" is more about soaking restoration companies for more licensing bread than it is preparation for slapping plastic badges on some future FWD eco-mess.

      On the other hand, the pre-bankruptcy GM sullied several other historic names by running 'em on awful junk (e.g. FWD "Malibu," FWD "Wimpala," Korean-built FWD "Nova," a whole slew of four-cylinder "SS" models) . . . so who knows what sort of moronic plan is circulating among the big-brained "marketers" at GM . . . .

      One thing I'd be certain of . . . any new "Chevelle" that might ooze out of the confines of today's GM isn't going to be very much like the memorable hot V8 A-body coupes of the past . . . .

          Gawd knows the GM styling dept will probly screw it up...

          I parked my rental car Impala in a large lot last week, and walked out later.... couldn't find it.

          It looked exactly like A. the ass of a Nissan Maxima B. the ass of a Ford mid-size sedan 'whatever' C. the ass of a whatever year Lexus (could only differentiate that one b/c of the blingy gold emblem... Dbags...) D. the ass of a Mazda mid-size sedan 'whatever'. E. I could go on.... yada, yada, yada... ad nauseum.

          Why the hell can't detroit make a friggin' good looking car with actual style? (I'd point to the lame attempt by Chrysler with the PT Cruiser, but I hate that gawddam thing. The ONLY reason it sold AT ALL was because it looked mildly 'retro' and was cooler than any other wimp-ass minivan. ---Yes, its a minivan---. Wake up and smell it... at least I give Chrysler points for trying)

          WHY do you think there's a WHOLE INDUSTRY dedicated to making old, cool, STYLISH cars run/drive/perform like a newer model?

          Because EVERYTHING out there today SUCKS from a styling perspective.

            Didn't someone a few years back take one of the new GTO's and make a one off "chevelle"? IIRC it looked like crap.

              Regardless of brand, the vast majority of vehicles that are "big sellers" today simply aren't suitable for serious, traditional Bangshifting because they're either way too big and heavy (most trucks**) or "wrong wheel drive." The days are over when a kid could look longingly at his parents' new Malibu and anticipate hopping it up into a real "street cleaner" someday. Today's Malibu is just another forgettable FWD appliance-mobile that will go unloved to the junkyard and the crusher when its days of shlocking grandma to the casino are over.

              None of the Detroit 3's popular offerings (except perhaps the big Hemi Mopars) are really any better from a Bangshifter's future raw material perspective (remember the G8's dead and its reincarnation as the Chevy SS hasn't gone on sale yet)

              **Yes, I've seen all the "turned-up" turbo diesels, SRT-10 Dodges, Lightnings, Brian Finch's '66 C10, and even the infamous "Pimp Juice" C10 "Farm Truck" sleeper, but I'm still not convinced that trucks are all that suitable for well-rounded performance work, when compared to a proper coupe or sedan.

                I had a similar thought when I was reading Road and Track's panning of the look-a-like styling of the new BMW 3-series . . . so it's not just a Detroit problem.

                We're getting oceans of inoffensive, focus-grouped, wind-tunneled, look-a-like cars and CUVs because that's what the people betting billions on new models believe will sell in the largest numbers for the largest potential profits.

                The current bland forms are cheaper to stamp out in quantity, easier to make compliant with the reams of safety/emissions/fuel economy regulations, and don't risk offending the garden variety "appliance motorists" who make up the vast majority of today's buyers.

                Also, in the halcyon days of Detroit styling (Post WWII until ~ 1972), cars were larger and less complicated, raw materials were cheaper, and most brands weren't trying to sell in a half-dozen size segments (until perhaps the very end of that period). So the styling departments were more free to push new designs and "style" was easier to incorporate into larger footprints.

                The industry lost its way in response to the regulated automobile (post-1970), rampant inflation, and the forced pursuit of fuel economy.

                And while today's vehicles are certainly better in terms of objective performance numbers than almost any vintage car (i.e. a ZR1 Corvette will lap the USGP course in Austin, TX, within a second or so of a championship-winning late '60s Formula One car), the "shining metal boxes" in which the new tech is encapsulated are mostly dreadful indeed.

                  Buddy in his 70's who had the fastest cars in town for YEARS, wife has a PT Cruiser, He sheepishly told me he liked it.. When my eyes popped and jaw dropped, he said, .I can slide in and out of it..no climbing up or down". This is a man still logging 10-12 hr days, 6 days a week!

                    If they come out with a car called Chevelle, and it has a big engine, and they make a wagon version, I am so buying one-- and I don't really care what it costs.

                        My eye doctor is a big talker and when he was car shopping he said the same thing. He wanted something that he could just get into without moving too far up or down. There are days I completely understand it. But back to the Chevelles, unless they're coming out with replicas of the original ones, I don't wanna see 'em.

                          camaros are competition for mustangs, I think the chevelle would be good competition against the challengers and chargers out there. Sure hope they aim at the challenger not the charger with a 4 door as the only choice, but just like before, 2,4 and wagons would work.

                            I can climb stairs fine.. It's the one step stoops that get me every time!
                            As for Chevelles... Gotta have the cool SS models that MEAN SOMETHING! Not just pretty badging..
