To all my Bangshift Friends, if you are driving down the road and your car starts to spudder or cutout, take extreme caution if you plan on opening the hood..... This happened to a good friend of mine today, his truck started cutting out on the freeway, he pulled over to the side of the road and popped the hood and when he did a huge fireball engulfed him, he is in the County Burn unit with burns to his head, hands and arms..... I know sometime we don't think about stuff like this happening, but be aware my friends it can very well happen when your not expecting it....... Still waiting to find out more on his condition, but whatever it is I wish him a speedy recovery.....
Ok on a Serious Note.....

wow. that must be rare..
hope he gets better.
lively time of year, springing in.
I took an old little engine to stoich on the highway just 50 miles, and drapered a pipe into destruction.
my problem went down in other words.Last edited by Barry Donovan; April 5, 2013, 03:59 PM.Previously boxer3main

Thoughts and prayers to the victim TC. Burns are the worst thing, and we've had a lot of them in my line of work, industry.
Not just a fireball from sputtering. You have to open the hood to extinguish the fire but...
A lift truck. A fire under the hood, they had the fire put out by shooting extinguishers through the vents. The fire was out. They opened the hood to see what the damage was, but the fire had burned ALMOST through a radiator hose. When they were all leaned over the engine looking at it, THEN the radiator hose gave out. Scalded a guy so bad......he died about a week later.
Safe Rule is, in a fire condition don't open the hood unless you're a trained fireman in full turnout gear, but that's a hard thing to not do when you're right there and your stuff's burning.Charter member of the Turd NuggetsComment

Thanks guys, they think it's mostly second degree burns, though they say it'll be a couple of days until they know the real severity of the burns....... And this is no joke, if your car stalls be very careful when opening the hood, or you to can look like my friend Ken......
This is Ken, he had a shitty day today.......

Been there, not fun. Mine was because I was young and stupid though, at least the first one. Don't mess around with black powder. Hopefully it was just a flash of hot air and he makes it through with no scarring. Looks like he closed his eyes in time, that's good. Tell him not to let it dry out to reduce the chance of scarring. I used salve for the first week, and a vitamin E oil for a month after. That's something I never would have thought about before popping the hood, maybe would have died out from lack of O2 if it stayed closed a little longer?Comment

Been there. When I was a freshman in college, I had a Honda CVCC. It had a plugged radiator, I didn't realize how bad until I drove it to school (3 1/2 hours one way) - it overheated when I got off the highway, so I pulled off to the side of the road (a couple miles from my destination) and figured I'd open the hood and let the thing cool off.... the radiator canister exploded as I was reaching for the rod to prop the hood up. 2nd and 3rd degree burns on my arm, and 2nd and 1st degree burns on the side of my face....
yeah, been there, done that - really, don't recommend it for anyone.
tell your buddy to get well soon - and stay out of the sun. With those burns, he's very susceptible to skin cancer for the next year.Doing it all wrong since 1966Comment

that gets me thinking underhood and potential disaster.
my Subaru pushes up against the hood after a lean condition or very hot..I still think they did that on purpose.
when hood pops real hard up..an indicator to back off perhaps.
Still did not stop the rod from coming through the top of the block.. but that was fun anyway.

Not bad... Face looks bad..
Son got burned when his water box blew hoses off.. Super heated water found holes in the firewall, on his left side of all places ..
Both kids were running that night..
Other drivers helped me load up and my brother who is blind in one eye drove one rig, me the other..
Called the hospital to find out how he was (pre iPhone days) receptionist just said " Sorry, we do not want any" when the relay service tried to contact them..
Hope he heals well! Face looks pained..morphine?Comment

life is hard - dying of cancer is about a billion times worse than getting burned. The pain goes away pretty quickly (burns), but it's a mother when they remove the bandages - especially once those blisters pop.Originally posted by TC View PostThat is going to be a hard one, he has a pool cleaning service........

Dang, '06 vehicle even, I was expecting maybe a carb fire or something. SBG hit the nail on the head, he'll want to take extra care from the sun and sources of dirt and infection. Looks like he is getting good treatment, hopefully he heals up well.Escaped on a technicality.Comment

Tell him to get a straw hat and wear long sleeve shirts. I got burns like that on my shoulders as a kid from sunburn. We were in Okinawa at the time.Originally posted by TC View PostThat is going to be a hard one, he has a pool cleaning service........
