does anyone make one that does DOES NOT go between the waterpump. winters make them for a small block and speedway makes a steel one that goes under the crank, but not really feeling that one... is there a reason there aren't more made that just bolt to the lower/front part of the block?

If it goes under the pan, then it has a bit of strength, which it is missing if it doesn't go up to the water pump.
Depending on how you're mounting the back of the motor, you could just make some ears to go off the lower mount holes on the front of the block, and it should work ok.My fabulous web page

This is a small block.. I do not know if there is old style front motor mount holes on the front of big blocks..
This is pre welding.. There are tabs to weld on the side plates for mounts..
They are called block savers or cradles.. There is a plate that goes over the pan.. They keep the 3 bolt holes on the sides from breaking, often into the water jacket..Last edited by Deaf Bob; April 10, 2013, 07:48 PM.

compare that to the speedway type plate, the mounting points are way way lower, which probably puts them below the frameMy fabulous web page

Most boats I've seen have some rubber in the system to isolate the vibrations from the hull - cracks around the engine mounting points are not uncommon.
That looks like a stout piece. There's always something new to learn.
