  • Who Else Digs The GM Colonnade Cars?

I dont know if Ive been reading PHR too much or what (sorry DF) but Ive always dug those cars-Lagunas, Can Ams, I love em. My first car was a '77 Grand Prix with a Pontiac 350 that I inherited from my brother. The 350 was lame so I went yarding and found a complete 455 for like $200 (this was in 1990) A cheap Summit cam, a used Holley 750, and rusty headers later and I was dusting off 5.0s left and right and the jokes from my high school classmates ended pretty quick.

I had this post on Moparts a couple months back, (with, uh, varied responses) and by the time it ran its course, I talked myself into parking this in my driveway

not bad for 3 figures huh! :P

Hey, Dan...I almost forgot about the GP. Looks like my dad's old '77.

i used to own a 71 grand prix SJ, 455/TH400. i loved the car until it got hit by some a-hole.
even with a bad carb(desperately in need of rebuild) it could roast the tires into 3rd gear. hehe

I myself have a '73 Chevelle(Deluxe)Coupe. Genuine Ex-1-owner Car. 90-thousand origional miles. It's painted that strange 'Warm Orange' color. 99% rust free. 250-L6/TH-350/8.5-10-Bolt. I've owned it for a couple months now, yet,I've yet to 'really' drive it. I bought it because it was a bit strange & up to that point,I hadn't see one for years. No plans for it,just to keep it in storage for now. ~OO6.

Re: Who Else Digs The GM Colonnade Cars?

I like those body styles as well even though they are pretty heavy cars by then. My oldest friend in the world drove a 74 Malibu coupe all through high school and college. It was a 350 2 bl car that was as stock as the day his dad bought it. His college roomie had a beautiful Laguna S3 with a 454 4 spd. I can't believe he drove that car year round in Nebraska.

                    There was a kid that had a 73 Cutlass with a 455.

What's so great about those cars is that you shove major wide tires under those quarters without having to hammer and roll fender lips.

how big can you go? Im hoping I can get 275/65/17s (or 18s) on the GP.

Can the bumpers be hollowed out on those cars?

Re: Who Else Digs The GM Colonnade Cars?

I suppose but you are going to have to build some sort of bracket to mount it. Also there is those bumper shocks that the are mounted to the frame rails. I removed the shocks on my 73 Impala, then used a second pair of clamshell brackets (these are between the bumper and it's shock) flipped upside down and bolt directly to the frame rails. This will move the bumper back as well. You will lose around sixty pounds that way, but the heavy bumper bracing is still in there.

This is what my 73's bumper looked like when I bought it.

This is what is looked like after I removed the shocks. Notice how the bumper got moved backward. No more need for that cracked plastic bumper filler.

It is still just as strong. I once slammed into a concrete wall in a garage and it didn't even move nor did the car get any damage.

As for the tires. I know of guys running 295/ 50 15's back there on 15x10's. In the old days N50's would fit nice as well. Proper rim backspacing is still necessary.

sweet, thats exactly what Im talking about...that really cleaned up the lines on your caprice and thats what I want on my GP. Those cattle crusher bumpers really look clunky on an otherwise clean bodystyle, plus all that weight.

                          Im getting giddy.

It was amazingly easy with no welding. I only had to drill two holes in the frame horns to mount it.

so should I be able to cut out the inner bumper frames and weld mounting blocks in?
