Stop me, I'm out of control!

In light of the amount of work ahead of me with the Thunderbird project, my lack of adequate space to work on that barge, and my large amount of impatience to be without a toy...I'm looking to get another, another project car. Please stop me.

I have this guy with a 1963 MGB roadster with a nice looking body. All the trim and interior is in boxes. I have him talked down to $500 without the Mopar small block or extra wheels.

This would get my 6.0L and a manual trans. The Thunderbird would keep it's Ford boat anchor.

Please help me, for $500 I'm having trouble saying no. My wife is going to kill me.

I know MGB's well having rebuilt one from a rust total. The body structure (look up Pressteel LTD.) will not handle anything like the kind of power you're talking about. Further, Pressteel counted on body flex as part of the "suspension" of the car. I stiffened mine and it rode like a buckboard! To make this work you're looking at a full tube frame along with suspension to match. I love the little devils but this is a HUGE project to make it work. If you really wanted to do something like this you would be better off with a Datsun 240Z or a Mazda RX7 - something along that line. The "B" should go to a restorer or someone with mild performance expectations, like maybe a 215 Buick.

don't look at me to say no, and up until lately when a certain young man was looking into a mangled Viper, I'd say don't look to this site for much help in saying no. Then I heard it again like a weak later, (yes, I said WEAK, I know I misspelled it.) You may actually hear No from some of the guys. They are getting old and toothless.

... Dan isn't voting but his voice is that of reason.

I can say this - I get attacked constantly by that bug and I'll say this. I wish I would finish a project before dragging more shit home to distract me. Your timing is right on - I was actually on a searchtempest hunt for a Vega and had just located one with the V8 kit (mounts, headers, trans x-member... I already have the 350/350. Thanks, you may have saved me.

There's a 1970 240Z for sale locally in roughly the same condition, but he won't go lower than $1,000. Also, not a roadster. As far as body flex goes not terribly worried about it. Or if it ends up riding stiff when I'm done. Already has a 8-3/4" rear installed on leaf springs. Not making a race car, autox car or anything reasonably safe here. Just a toy.

It's probably a horrible, horrible idea.

Don't do it. You got rid of the Camaro to build a family oriented hot rod. To do something with 2 seats and not furthering the Tbird is going to be a 100% departure from the reason you got out of the Camaro. If the car has anything to do with your wife's marital or financial happiness, don't do it.

On the other hand.... no... don't do it.

                          A voice of reason.

Think I'm going to pick it up anyway, but focus on getting the t-bird functioning and the interior to a wife approved status. The big problem right now is that although the T-bird will fit in the garage, nothing else will. I think the t-bird will just be a cruiser now, dropped on big wheels and nothing special.

But, watching the Camaro go away and letting that sink in has made me realize that I'm going to need something small, cheap, simple and fast to play with.

Too bad those cars are so damn ugly except for the late model FD. But those are hardly affordable yet. I'm still a style snob...80s cars are just too ugly for my taste.
