  • What is this SBC block?

Here's the block casting number =14101148
    Date Code =J106
    Partial vin? VB107027
    Piston part number 10045332

I know it's a 86-94 350 4bolt main. Is this an 86 engine? Or is it later? I am using this in a truck I am going to use for towing and want to get the parts to freshen it up. (I am still going to call you Rev) There are differences in the 86 engine that make it unique from what I've read, but the date code leads me to think this is a 87 or later engine.

    What do you think?

Its a hydraulic (flat tappet) 350 block. It SHOULD have a regular hydraulic cam, but might be machined for a hyraulic roller, too.

If it were 14011148..not 14101148, it would for sure, be a roller block.

If its still assembled, pull off a valve cover, pull a rocker, and take out a pushrod. Shortie pushrods (a little over 7") are hydraulic roller, (close to) 7-3/4" is non-roller pushrod.

Either way, it'll take all standard 350 parts. Only "funny" thing might be the timing chain set-up depending on the cam. Everything else is just dependent on one or two-piece rear seal.

the date code says it's an 87 model year engine.

I seem to recall that 86 vette motors had the one piece rear seal, trucks didn't get that till 87.

The partial vin you listed VB107027 doesn't look right, though...should be 3 characters then the 6 digit serial number, but the letter for the year 1987 would be G, which I think should be the second character.

87 sbc 305 and 350 engines ALL CRACK in the lifter valley
        magnaflux it please
I tried on an 88 , thought it was good , spent 50 to clean it , magnafluxing showed over 50 cracks starting
they made the lifter wall too thin in 87-88
        we did hundreds under warranty
