  • (S//NP)Low Budget Forged Custom Piston Makers

    Howdy,

My search for a block that will take std bore pistons is coming up empty and the pile of parts that I need to test fit and make modifications to for my Bonneville motor is getting bigger, as is the list of things I need to try out.

I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that I'm going to need custom pistons for this application just to keep the expenses of the block from going through the roof. Now, this is a temporary combo that the block will be the weak link but an approriate block for my end goal of HP is north of $2K which I don't have in any case. As such I don't want to sink too much into the pistons in case I torch one during tuning or the block cracks...etc. I'm mainly after saving my crank and rods if something lets go.

Who makes no frills custom pistons at a low budget price? Basically I just need a 3.810-3.820in bore (block clean up will determine that) pure flat top with a metric ring pack and 0.927 pins in a compression height of my choosing.

    BME? RaceTec? CP?

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks,

      that number is familiar.

I think probe was the answer there too.
the little sube ea82 is 3.65 standard, metric etc etc.

I came up with a "paeco", claimed they can do anything.

      http://www.paeco.com/Piston%20Prices.htm

Pistons can be made up for any engine in any bore size, compression ratio, or stroke.
I found this for a ea series, as wiseco has some for more money. Why pay more?
if your engine holds a high compression from factory, you may get out of forgings and go standard.
a few more pennies to save.

        Just a suggestion...

If you are trying to do this on a budget, be sure and pick a bore size that will also have affordable and available piston rings.

        Good info here: http://www.mahle-aftermarket.com/C12...E/PR-10-10.pdf

Looks like rings are readily available for 3.800" to 3.815"

The next size up is 3.858".... looks a bit too large for your application.

It's really no different than trying to glue them back on after she has her way.

One of the big reasons I'm looking for a metric ring pack is the lack of good turbo rings in 3.800in bore (plus over sizes) in the old school 5/64 thick rings. I can do with the 1/16in stuff and am pretty hooked on Total Seal's Napier second ring configuration. I guess I should have said Modern not Metric to mean getting away from the 5/64in rings. Turbo Buicks and 2.3L OHC Fords both use the 3.800 and over sizes bore diameters.

I have Diamonds in my other motor and love them, but this motor is far more likely to go wrong than my 4.1 in the Riviera. I want something I'm not going to cry over breaking because of cost.

            Probe does look promising.
Any RaceTec experience? Supposedly the original JE piston designer's new company and the phone quote they gave me was pretty reasonable.

Will do tomorrow if I get the chance between work, a coworkers retirement, and response to the fires that broke out today north and south of the city...

Probably Probe then Wiseco for ballpark quotes and check if they do singles later if I mess one up.
