  • Heaven help me, Road Trip with the family

So we are taking a road trip this year for vacation. Rolling from Phoenix to Atlanta and back. I am looking for some suggestions on gearhead destinations along the way. Primary route will be interstates with maybe some highway/biway backroads along the way. Wife and I both want to stop at Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo. I would like to hit the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega. Any other ideas?

Also, the wife didn't want to take the Town Car(my project/cruiser car), so no kewl roadside repar stories on this one. She wanted to play it safe with a rental. Looks like a Government Motors Impala will be our trusty steed on this one.

best part of a rental is you can treat it like a rental. I'm going to have to learn to slow down and see sites.. too much of dad's "Lets put some miles behind us" mentality. It's hard to see the roses you're supposed to smell when you whistle by at 75. Bump for ya, and Good luck!
Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.

There's a Petroleum Museum in Midland, Tx if you're into that sorta thing. Texarkana, where you can stand in two states at once. There are, at least use to be, retired Naval vessels you could walk through in a few Gulf Coast cities, again if that is something that might interest you/family.

Every rest area in the country has a thousand brochures for all the various sites to see in that area or state. May find something in one of those that isn't highly advertised otherwise.

You can google the state name & tourism to find each states tourism board and their complete list of sites to see.

          Here's one for Alabama.

Alabama vacations have so much to offer including the great outdoors, white sandy beaches, music legends, rich history, scientific dreams,& so much more

And Alabama has a space center in Huntsville. All depends on the strictness of your route & time schedule.

Explore the birthplace of America's most iconic music, as well as a region of picturesque towns, sites of historical significance and more. Contact Visit Mississippi online for more information.

Adventure awaits at every corner. Native American culture abounds. National and state treasures are easy to find. And history is created every day. You find them all here in every one of New Mexico's six regions. Find out what each area has to offer.

Ready. Set. Get out and explore the best attractions and places to stay in Georgia, from beaches to small towns and cities. Plan your Georgia vacation today.

Carlsbad caverns NM is pretty interesting - if you can time it right to arrive in the evening you can hang out and wait for the thunderous exit of what seems like 10 million bats that come out every night at dusk.
There's always something new to learn.

You can choose Planes or Cars.

If you take the I-40 route you will pass by:
                  http://www.tupeloautomuseum.com/index.php in Mississippi
                  and http://museumofautos.com/ in Arkansas

If you take I-10/I-20 you have:
                  http://www.cavanaughflightmuseum.com/ in Dallas
                  and http://www.commemorativeairforce.org/ in Midland, TX

We are taking 1-40 on the way over and I-10 on the way back. I believe I have been to Cavanaugh before. I got stuck in Dallas for a month for training. Tupelo is definately on the agenda. My adopted daughter has family there.

Stopped at Cadillac Ranch last August. Can say I've been there, but somewhat disappointing. The cars are in rough shape, and ya really can't even tell most are Cadillacs. Glad we stopped, as I doubt it'll be around in another 10 years.
