Help finding parts for a 1966 GMC 5-ton truck

  • Help finding parts for a 1966 GMC 5-ton truck

    We have this rotten old truck that's slowly dying on us. Unfortunately, grain farms like ours are legally required to have at least one truck that's so rotten and worn out that requires 2 hours of repairs for every mile driven.

    So this time around, the master cylinder on the clutch is worn out and needs a rebuild. I've had it apart and it's just the rubber bits need to be replaced--everything else is in good shape.

    Strangely, the local hardware store seems to be out of master cylinder rebuild kits for the only retired 50-year old government salt truck known to mankind (Pffft, and they call themselves a parts store!). Does anyone out there know who might carry rebuild kits, or even just the two big rubber seals on each side of the plunger?

    All I found was a manual brakes Brake/Clutch dual master cylinder for a 66 P-10 w/250 6cyl.

      willow motors would have had it , if the president didn't close it in 2009

        That looks really close, right down to the lid on the reservoir. I would even order it and make it work, except this truck has air brakes (sometimes). Thanks though, that's closer than anything else I've found online!

          Well, I guess that's what they call "progress." I worked at a GM dealer that got its franchise pulled my first day on the job, so I know your pain. We were already selling more used imports than new GMs, so it would have actually worked for us. That is, until the managers decided it was time to start showing off by stocking the lot full of high end BMWs, Mercedes, Audi, Corvette, Shelby Cobra 'stangs, etc, and park them under a big sign saying "Bad Credit? WE WILL APPROVE ANYONE!!!"

          Which was actually kinda fun until we ran out of low-income/bad credit folks who were pre-approved for a used Porsche Cayenne. It was a hungry year on that sales floor.

              Take pictures of the truck and the clutch master & I'll try to locate one..

                  If I'm not harvesting oats tomorrow, I'll try to get the master cylinder out of it again and measure it. I did find a rubber piece that fit and looked somewhat like the original, but everyone else on the ranch seems to have their doubts that it will work--hence the search for a part that comes in a box with a label.

                  As for truck porn, I can't find any right now. If everyone is patient enough for me to go shoot more, I might even provide video!

                    I needed a good laugh this morning.

                    here they get 12,000 for a 1999 LS series engine with 350,000 miles on it.

                    anyway..
                    to approach your truck locally would have a different setup hacked in... for parts available to replace.

                    same as hot rods really.

                      Truck porn is on its way, just be patient guys

                      And I hope that's the right part you found, I just ordered one from Rockauto.com. I had the original one apart, and it kinda feels like the insides of the cylinder have some wear in them. Also, I have no idea how it's supposed to go back together--it was given to me in pieces, and no matter what I try, there is no way to reassemble it that makes any sense.

                          And as promised, here's the truck porn:



                          This is the truck, a '66 GMC somethingorother. Most of the tags are gone, so finding parts can be a nightmare. It was also a government snowplow/salt truck once upon a time, so most of the sheetmetal is rusted off, too. There are no words for the joy of hitting a bump and being showered in rust flakes from the roof.



                          The good news is that I'm getting a lot better at fixing antique trucks--carb rebuild, electric fuel pump conversion, and fixed a rad leak last year, clutch master cylinder this year. If we keep going at it, someday we'll have....

                          ...a rusted out '66 GMC. *sigh*

                          The good news is, we still have this!



                          '76 GMC 8-ton. Low miles, full tandem, 5+4 trans, probably a 396 in it, and has been a graintruck since new.

                          Hope this satisfies the truck porn requirement, Lohnes, but let me know if you need more :D
