awesome.
is it a relabeled Isuzu or is it gm from the ground up.
did they chop a v8 in half and use epoxy?
that is how the v8 came about in the first place...now they are going the other direction.

Duramax is a GM engine, developed with VM Motori I believe. Here in Aust we get both the Holden (GM) Colorado with the 2.8L Duramax engine and the closely related Isuzu D-Max with the Isuzu 3.0L diesel engine. The Duramax is a newer engine and feels more highly stressed than the bigger Isuzu engineComment

Isuzu's contribution to the Duramax was in the DMAX Ltd. partnership. They developed the combustion chamber design, the Duramax isn't based off any isuzu engine before that. And besides, Isuzu is WAAAAY better at building diesels than GM, it was smart for Gm to get some guidance.
My Aunt was the CFO for DMAX Ltd. in Moraine, for about 10 years before she retired.www.realtuners.com - catch the RealTuners Radio Podcast on Youtube, Facebook, iTunes, and anywhere else podcasts are distributed!Comment

Chrysler did good long ago, buying a credible name to put on the sides/under the hood of their diesel trucks instead of trying to mess with it themselves. After slapping the moniker "Dura-" onto Vega motors in the last year trying to convince people they were a good engine, I will never fully trust a GM Dura-anything. If you have to call it a Dura- to sell it, what then is the matter? Can't it just get a reputation by itself, as Cummins did?
That said, I have a friend with a DuraMax (maybe 100K now) and it's been a good motor....Comment

I'm interested to see how the 4-cylinder duramax goes. I'd consider myself a potential owner of one in the future if the power and mpgs are right.Escaped on a technicality.Comment

The small truck market isn't what it used to be - but I can see that pendulum swinging back if trucks are made that people value, Ford messed up by putting the ranger out to pasture and carrying it over with no changes for so long.
I look forward to hearing more about these - it could be a real home run for folks that want some utility without driving a 6000lb bohemoth and want fuel economy better than high teens. There's always something new to learn.Comment

My dad had a shop truck for 20 years - a Isuzu diesel, 2wd, long bed truck. We beat the living snot out of that truck, and the worst mpg it got was 45 mpg. We used it like a 1 ton - e.g. we put a 20' commercial vent hood on the ladder rack (~500 lbs), 48x60" flat side - and hauled it to Seattle. Got 45 mpg.... top speed was 55.Originally posted by TheSilverBuick View PostI'm interested to see how the 4-cylinder duramax goes. That's the yardstick - if the truck does better than 30mpg, my H3 will find a new home.Doing it all wrong since 1966Comment
