  • I Can't Decide if I Have a Problem With This Story or Not

Ahhhh, not all kids are hooligans and gangsters, And there are still some parents who instill real values in their kids. This is really heartwarming except for one line.

I don't even like baseball (overpaid underworked jocks), but the headline caught me:

Boy returns A-Rod's milestone grand slam ball

The 12-year-old fan who retrieved Alex Rodriguez's record 24th career grand slam ball from the stands at Yankee Stadium says he gave it back because he felt the slugger had "worked hard" for the feat and deserved it.

Steven Gieseler Jr., of East Islip, scooped the ball from beneath a seat as Rodriguez rounded the bases in a game against the Giants on Sept. 20.

The slam allowed Rodriguez to break a record held by Steven's all-time favorite Yankee, Lou Gehrig.
But the middle schooler told Newsday that when a security official approached him and said Rodriguez wanted the ball, he had no problem turning it over.

"It's the player's accomplishment," the boy said. "He deserves to get it back. He worked hard for it."
After the game, Steven and his father were escorted into a private room where they met with Rodriguez, who gave him an autographed bat and ball, and asked him whether he had been to the stadium before or played baseball.

"He said, "Hey buddy, nice catch," but I just stood there in awe," Steven said.

The boy's mother, Tina Gieseler, said her son has a big heart.

"We've always taught our kids that people work their whole lives for something like this," she said.

Sending a securty guard to take a ball away from a 12 year old? The guy has zero class.

So, is that a feel good story, or a get pissed off at some already rich asshole story? I'm torn. That's where my brain is. I can't decide.

He should have asked security to bring the kid to the locker room where he could have offered something the kid would never forget in exchange for the ball .........this story, as it reads, is good for the kid, but typically bad for Nay-Rod.

I don't care if it was a record hit, if it went into the stands its' the fans' ball. Sending a security guard to fetch the ball then give the kid some signed souvenir stuff wreaks of arrogance, overly self-important millionaire that thinks his don't pollute. JMO though.

I've slept on it and read it all again.

I'm still torn. I guess Ed nailed it - a good story about a kid with a great morals, and a bad story about a rich asshole.

I guess that's what it is.

I wonder if A-Hole will ever realize what he did to that kid? Not if the kid never realizes it. I reckon that was a great moment for that kid, the way it reads at least.

Ok lets see, if nothing would of happened the kid would of just got a baseball that some guy hit out of the park, instead he got a signed bat and ball by a guy that broke a record. Hmmmm, I'm thinking the Signed stuff is going to have more credibility/value than saying ya this is the ball, with on signature.

That's part of what's confusing to me as well. The kid gave up ....well, none of it means anything to me, but that ball might have been worth something to a collector in 20 years or so. A-hole's record home run ball. What the heck is A-hole gonna do with it? Sell it? I'm sure he needs the money.

None of them will amount to too much money because of steroid use by the douche canoe mentioned above. Probably shouldn't have used that term because both of them serve a useful purpose, whereas rimjob serves only himself.

I think TC is right.....no way to prove the ball is anything other than a baseball. No value now, or in 20 years. I still stand by my original analysis........a signed bat??.... come on, even Nay-Rod can do better than that for the kid......

Wasn't there a thread where would you pay more for a car because a celebrity owned it?
                        Same differences..
Rasheed Wallace, the basketball player, gave his boys the game balls he was given.. Reporter asked him about it after watching the boys toss them in the house.. His reply?.." They are just f'n balls".
Some were signed... Or are all game balls signed?

Arod wanted it as it'll be his last grand slam before he is banned for life. I'm sure the s/guard was to bring the kid to the room and a rod asked for a "trade" the media tends to twist stories and they at the moment are not "fans" of "a roid"
