  • Time to start some s**t: four valve Fords dominate P H R EMC Challenge

Two days results are in and the Accufab/Milhovitz 402 cubic inch four valve modular Ford has a 150 point plus lead on the rest of the field lead by the stout 428 Pontiac of Team Throttle's performance. In a competition marked by wins of less than a full point in past years, having a single entry gap the competition by this kind of margin says that engine architecture does matter. In the coming days two max effort LS and Ford four valve modular entries from past winners should confirm the seeming dominance of the four valve Fords.

Same rules, same cubic inch minimum: discuss.

    That mod motor is killer.

I'm geeking over Freelander's 11.5:1, P51 headed, hyd roller crammed BBF making 870 hp with a 4150 carb. Yowza.
Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

I like Phil's 572 too. But the formula says the four valves rule. What are we seeing there Spidey?

Those 4 valve engines SHOULD win. That coyote engine is a bad mo' fo. Ford finally built the engine it promised the 4.6L to be back in 1994 or when ever it first came out. That's was a long wait.

*or is it actually a 4 valve mod motor? If so, that is an even more impressive accomplishment.

My point is simple, if we are talking which domestic factory based platform makes the most power per cubic inch, the four valve modular Fords win hands down. This year's EMC is the first contest of its kind to allow them to compete on well defined, level playing field. The results, IMHO, were predestined, if you can look past past the conventional biases. If someone can make he case otherwise, please do.

I would like to see a well sorted Northstar V8 in this deal to test the theory, but for the moment the results speak for themselves.

No Coyote's 4V's allowed, only the older architecture. You know, Navigator motors.

the problem with the Ford (other than they change things just to piss off the backyard mechanic) is it fits in nothing. I couldn't care less how much hp per cubic inch it makes... if it doesn't fit, it's a doorstop.

                      Que Speedy.

I expect esteemed counsel will weigh in shortly. In the mean time, it'll be interesting to compare the results o this year 's formula agianst the past. The big issue this year is the requirement for stock style valve train. No shaft rocker conversions, hence all the valve train stability issues.

I wanna stroke my 305. Will I get 500hp for $1500 like the magazine said? What should I do?

But seriously, the greater flow area of a multi-valve engine allows more mixture in than the conventional two-valve. As for cam placement, pushrod/ohc, less internal frictional loss and better valve control/stability equates bigger numbers at the flywheel.

I enjoy reading engine masters because there are tricks that can apply to stuff I do.... that said, I still wonder where the line is between a "Ford" or a "Chevy" motor is when nothing in the motor came from GM or Ford...

thus, to your first point, starting schmidt.... the motor is as much a Ford as my 455 Buick is still a Buick (sleeved, girdled, half filled, aluminum headed, chevy rockers, sheet metal intake, bbc rods, custom pistons.... I guess since the block and crank came from Buick it's still a Buick?) Hell, come to think of it, my Buick motor is now a Chevy motor, right?

It's a Chevy motor modified so the distributor angles out the front?

Well, obviously Chevy people have a hard time admitting loss. I haven't seen any of the info from the magazine but, I won't deny it. Ford won one. How's that?
