    stair tread replacement.

Getting rid of the carpet in the house. I bought prestained treads.

Now that I have the carpet up it looks like the base board is on top of the old treads.

What's the right way to do this? Wonder if these are prefab stairs?

I put the hard woods upstairs downstairs already had them. The top step is now tall and bottom is short.

Old treads are 10" new are 11.5" I guess my table saw is going to get a work out.

I am looking for advice that does not include fire!

Called rightpedal (Steve) had a great chat. He told me what to do. Should have called him before I bought my materials. Thanks Steve!

I was going to recommend that you call Steve. He knows this stuff. I generally call Jason, my next door neighbor. He's a finish carpenter so I just get out of the way and watch.

Yea Dan if Russel was any closer I would be there telling him to get out of my way.... and whats for lunch?

The pictures show pretty much what we talked about.

Question the nose at the top landing unfinished?

The tricky part is the joint at the landing to the finished lower railing cap. might be a tricky cut.
Well I have stopped buying stuff for cars I don't own. Is that a step in the right or wrong direction?

The top is finished bamboo nose. I am going to put down oak floor on the lower landing. The plan is to flush butt the floor to the rail. That's what I did upstairs it looks OK.

Okay...what was the cure? I anticipate running up against this same problem in the near future! Help!?

I suggest calling Steve! The short version. Pull all staples. Still in the stage b/c I quit yesterday to wash the vw and ranger. Cut nose off. Glue / nail new pretty riser (I need to buy) glue / nail new treads. Mine are 1" thick throughout Steve said he uses ones that are thinner with a thick nose. New Treads are 36" I will have to trim about an inch off squareness will determined how easy that will be. The object is to keep the gaps small b/c there is no trim to hide the gaps.

                      Here's our project.
Purchased the unfinished treads and stained them ourselves.........package came with the risers.

Put about 4 coats of the Varathane on them.
Still look good a year later.

We just cut to fit.........you could dress the sides up I guess....with some one by material.

We bought ours at Lumber Liquidators......found them much cheaper later at Lowes.
Hindsight we might've painted the risers white.

The original plan was to have white risers, but Steve made a great point white will show shoe marks.

is there a reason you are not just sanding the wood under the carpet and then stain/ploy that? I see the os fiber board at the landing, that need to go, but the rest should be just sand/stain/ploy
