Software upgrades... I'm strangely giddy about this one.

Been running AutoCAD 2006 since it came out in 2005. It has worked great for many many years, but sadly it is no longer supported by Autodesk and many of the files we get from outside vendors have to be converted back to 06. That worked well, but now we're seeing that more and more content does not convert, so we are finally going to upgrade to 2014.

Of course new computers are required too, so I finally get to retire the 10 year old HP computer.

I normally do not get excited about software upgrades, but this time I can't wait. Hell I'm even posting about it on a car forum. That ought to tell you something!

The new ones have 8g of RAM and 1.5T drives, Win7 pro. My 2003 xp machine currently has 120 gig drive and 704mb of RAM. lol Should be a nice upgrade.

I wish we would upgrade from Acad 2008. We use it to layout factories and warehouses and Solidworks for machine design. I like that we keep up on Solidworks, I just wish we kept up on Acad. Like you, I have to do a lot of conversions to the older formats. We just bought a couple of copies of 14LT to do the conversions, so I doubt that Acad will get updated any time soon.

But enough of my complaining, good for you!

Roger that - I put one in my old work computer to keep the OS on and just put the data / less used programs on the disk... it really made a new machine out of it.

Things have come so far it's unreal since I started playing. I don't think kids who's cell phones have 2gb ram and 4 core processors even know how many zero's are in a GB, much less a real concept of how large a TB is. Good luck with the new version learning curve, hopefully they didn't change a bunch of stuff just to change it.

What messes me up with all of this is laptops. My old work server class machine is sitting in the corner, (2) 4 core processors, 16gb, couple of TB's worth of drives, 7 years old now... and dormant. I don't need that much HP (?!?!!) for what I do any more. The laptop has replaced it. The laptop they made me give back (dammit) when I left was ungodly, 17", 32gb ram, 250 ssd, 500 gb disk instead of a DVD , i7 ... battery consumer / apartment warmer. I remember laughing when I started because "640k ought to be enough for anybody" (Bill Gates)

for those real writers using multithreading, floating a big world..those computers are just for that.

on my old pc, I am using the first of the 3d attempts. it is humbling...

should be a big leap.

The only reason I would upgrade, is for better editing of video, and software that use of multicores and hyper threads.

else, it aint worth it.

Of course just like nitrous, there's running an SSD and really RUNNING an SSD. Here's a tweak guide by the best.
