Mechanical (Chemical and Nuclear) engineers build weapons, Civil engineers build targets.

This is Nuclear Engineering... like bomb design. I don't think anyone that designs nuclear weapons wears Birkenstocks...Leave a comment:

You going to start wearing a wool tweed coat and Birkenstock sandals now?Leave a comment:

Thanks,Originally posted by Huskinhano View PostCongratulations! That's no small feat. You're very modest. Best of luck. What kind of duty would you like to per sue with that nuke PhD? Ever read John Craven's book, "The Silent War"?
Most likely I'd be in a headquarters type job working on program management or policy guidance in the areas of nuclear forensics or counter proliferation. I also might be on a staff doing consequence management or stockpile assurance as well. Hard to say till I find out who has effectively "sponsored" my PhD. It's an outside shot that I might even teach at AFIT with it but I didn't volenteer for that so its less likely.
Never read that book. These days I barely have time to keep up on my course work and stay involved with my family it seems, work is running full bore. I'll have to look it up and see if I squeeze it in on the airplane next time I travel.Leave a comment:

Thanks to all for the congrats!
Seriously though, congratulations on being accepted. That is an awesome achievement and we certainly look forward to the day you come on here and post that you've completed your PhD!Leave a comment:

Congratulations! A couple of years ago I finished up my MSME and was accepted into a PhD program, but life got in the way so I could not go. (Moved and changed jobs instead). I am sure you will do well.
Now the theme song for "Spies like us" is stuck in my head. BTW- when either I call my brother or he calls me, we start into the "Doctor... Doctor..." routine.

I was never on the enlisted side but I've never been a fan of the whole "officers are hands clean and enlisted are hands dirty" type of model. I started out as at the bottom of the totem pole in NDI scraping paint and processing film. I still get too deep in the mechanics of how things work for where I'm at. Fun part about being a scientist is I do get to play in the lab but that's really coming to an end now. I've been trying for this program so I can do awesome stuff vs. teach others. No offense to teachers but I want to be on the figuring out and doing side. Hopefully I'll get to manage programs and lead people to do awesome stuff with this education in the future.Originally posted by JOES66FURY View PostI am just a lowly enlisted wrench bender so I havent a clue what any of that O speak means...but it sure sounds like a big deal...Congrats!
