Re: Dumbest thing I've done lately

Thanks, Rebel, you reminded me of one...

Senior year HS ('01), was setting up a leg press. I was a showoff, so I was setting it real heavy. Had a random guy helping me put the 100-lb weights on, so I didn't tweak my back. We were setting the final weight group up when the teacher calls out, "Hey, Williams!"..

Kid you not, the guy lets go of the weight and turns to answer. Me, unaware that this delinquent is gonna do this, is still holding onto the weight. Crushed my right hand, lost four out of five fingernails, had to have a ring cut off my hand, broke the ring and the all-important middle finger, I found out later.

After screaming a couple choice words, a couple others get the weight off of my hand, which by now looks like Plum Crazy Purple. Teacher walks up to me, looks at it, mutters "Just put some ice on it...pussy." and walks away. I drove myself to the health dept. where my stepmother works....

I love nurses. So sympathetic. So caring. Sooooo loving... ;D
    Editor-at-Large at...well, here, of course!

"Remy-Z, you've outdone yourself again, I thought a Mirada was the icing on the cake of rodding, but this Imperial is the spread of little 99-cent candy letters spelling out "EAT ME" on top of that cake."

My nurse didn't look like that!

Anyway, I went to the specialist yesterday and the all said what a nice break it was. Didn't make me feel any better. So they put a cast on it and tell me 5 weeks of not walking on it.

I get up this morning, and it hurts worst then when I did it. Back to the doctor. As soon as they take the cast off, you can see my foot start to shrink and most of the pain goes away.

Now I got this zoomie boot that Velcro's on(I know Velcro is remedial, but I'm hurt, so give me a break) and has ballons around the ankle I can pump up. When I'm just sitting around I can take it off. Way better.

that's weird about the cast. When I got hit by the car, my ankle got wrenched really bad--I found a drug store and bought an Ace bandage. After taking off my hiking boots, I wrapped my foot and ankle in the bandage, taking very good care not to make it tight. It was firm, but not tight at all. Just there for support and to make sure I didn't move it at weird angles while I slept.
It woke me up in the middle of the night, just throbbing and hurting like hell, even through the 4 Advil I took. I took off the bandage and it immediately felt better. A steady diet of Advil for the next several days helped. That's interesting that you had the same experience with the cast. I'd never heard of it before.

They also said no Advil, Motrin, etc. It slows down the healing process. Just one asprin in the morning and one at night to prevent blood clots from the bruising. The things you learn from injury.

              Dave -
Sorry, Dude! You take care and heal up quick. I'm manly enough to get my butt to the doc or hospital at the slightest provocation - they've told me to. With all the stuff that's wrong with me, they told me it's cheaper if they can get to me quickly. I don't get to the ER very often, but I'm at one doc or another frequently, usually just for check-ups (like this morning, for example).

                Dumbest thing lately:

Last night I was sanding an aluminum part on the drum sander, held it up and blew it off. ALL (and I mean EVERY molecule... at least it seemed) the aluminum filings went directly into both my stupidly wide and unprotected eyes.

Took a little while to get them cleaned out.

Heal up quick and listen to the docs - if you don't like them - find one you do like and listen to them. My knee went at 17, surgery then still hurts now and the other one is going.... this stuff is no fun.

OH yea - don't mix the hydrocodone with booze --- wow - ZOMBIE!

I was wire brush on a drill to clean up a bracket I was going to paint. I was wearing gloves and got the spinning brush to close to my thumb. It grabbed the material and ran right down the thumb to my wrist and spun right under the glove taking all the skin off my wrist. Ow.

I put gloves on purposely to save my hands from cuts as I was removing an old TV antenna from the chimney of my rental house.

I carefully walked to the edge of the roof carrying the antenna --- the plan was to lower the antenna as far as I could - then drop it onto the grass.....

I dropped it --- part of the antenna caught the cuff of the glove -- and the antenna pulled me off the roof!

I landed on my feet - but noticed my hand hurt..... one of the pieces of the antenna had punctured my hand..... pulled back the glove - looked it --- went to the first aid kit, poured peroxide over it, and put a bandaid on it, then folded up the antenna and put it in the roofing dumpster -- then noticed that the bleeding had soaked glove with blood - so I drove to the ER and they put in 8 stitches.
There's always something new to learn.

Sounds like if you didn't have bad luck, you wouldn't have any. Glad it's nothing serious!

Re: Dumbest thing I've done lately

My dumbest thing I've done recently.....(other than work on cars!) involves my back staircase.

I (like a dumbass) came downstairs one morning carrying the upstairs bathrooms' garbage in one bag. Fully clothed, wearing socks (you know, in a hurry!), rushing to slip on shoes, and head to work.

Socks + carpeted second staircase = big gashing nasty white meat cut.

I slipped on the 2nd or 3rd step....and luckily? caught myself on the railing mounted to the wall with my elbow...so at least I didn't break my neck....OR drop the bag of garbage???..(like that was important over breaking ones' neck!)

Actually, I elbowed the entire railing OFF!

The railing fell down, scratching a 3ft gash in the drywall, a 1" x 3" piece of my left forearm was missing, and blood was spewing all over the stairs (wanna piss your wife off? Just bleed on her neutral carpet!!!!)

I thought it wasn't anything big.

I proceed to get a couple paper towels, blot the area a couple times, and continue out to the garage to drop the bag, and drag the big garbage can to the street.
I turned to go back up the driveway....and saw the trail of blood I left on the concrete while pulling the garbage can some 200ft.
Then, I looked at my arm, and realized I could see white, oozy stuff (looked like fatty meat, small yellowish globs of stuff, and little veins....when I rinsed it off, I could see bright meat (muscle?). I wrapped a couple more paper towels on it, went back to the garage and got some shop-rags (everyone knows they are the cleanest, best wound dressing in the world, right?) and went back inside to see what else was screwed up.

I noticed the wall damage, looked at the railing (split and the bracket broken) and started to look around....then I noticed the big chunk of fatty meat stuck on the rail mount protruding from the wall.

Thats when you get kinda weak...... :o

I hastily wiped up the spilled blood (CSI, I ain't), and went to work....packed it with about 10 packs of antiseptic gel, a couple gauze pads (with antiseptic, too ;D), and a big ace bandage.

I should have gotten it stitched.

That cut stayed open for more than a month.

Someone asked me the other day what the scar was from?
I told them I was ducking down in a drive-bye shooting....

It sounded better than telling them I busted my ass on my back staircase!!! ;D

Any time I've had a major injury, the most important thing is to make up a good story, because EVERYONE is going to ask you what happened. Most of mine start with, "Well, I was skiing in the Alps when I saw this......". I don't ski and never did, but it's a good start for almost any injury story. I actually did break my right arm badly schooling to go into a Hunter class at a horse show. Perhaps due to my previous "storytelling" no one would believe me.

Was it Dave Atell's routine? "Chainsaw and whiskey" the perfect answer to the "What happened to you?" question. ;D
