  • Got A Break Finally

A few people here know about this (STINEY does). I left the auto salvage business for good in June after working in it on & off since 1993. I can't say I don't miss working in salvage. I miss the regular customers, some of which I've known for 20 years or more. I miss solving people's problems, and saving them money on repairs. I miss all of the cool junk cars that came through the gates, and all of the free stuff people would leave inside of them. Anyway...

Back in November I got a call from a friend and former customer. He's owned his own shop for a while, but he ended up landing a good job at a local dealer shop. We got to talking, he told me the shop desperately needed an experienced part guy. He said the current part guy(s) are lets say 'limited' in their abilities, (more like grossly limited). He asked if I was interested in a parts guy position. Of course! I said, but the pay better be good. He put the good word in for me, the company wasn't hiring right away, but my credentials put me first in line when they do decide to hire someone.

Fast forward to two weeks ago. I got another call from my friend, this time he has good news. His boss briefed everyone at a shop meeting that a designated full time part specialist job had opened up, and if anyone knew a good parts guy to let him know. He knew about me from before when my friend put the word in, but he had to announce it to everyone first, to give anyone currently working in the shop a fair shot the job. My friend spoke up during the meeting and said you need to hire my buddy, he's the perfect guy for the job. Soooo, I went down for my first interview last Wednesday. I met the boss, he seems like a decent guy, has a lot on his plate, but is decent none the less. The shop is very nice with state of the art everything, it's definitely a multimillion dollar business. We hashed out an initial deal, and this week I got the call.. It looks like I'm in!

There's still some paperwork and misc stuff we need to hammer out, but all in all it appears to be a done deal. I will be handling all of incoming parts inventory, making sure stuff goes where it's supposed to, and all of the parts needed to fix the cars are present. It's a fast paced job, but it's a cake walk compared to what I've done in the salvage business over the years. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. My friend told me the first week will be rough as it usually is in any new job, but after you get the system down things goes much easier.

I'm glad I finally got a break, wish me luck guys!!!

Best of luck to you! It's kind of a cool buzz getting into a new gig, hopefully it's the good kind that keeps going.

If you like your job you don't have to go to work everyday.

                Congrats

So - are they going to start mass producing your great ideas to fix the Jeep issues?

Great work - hope it turns into something even better than you imagine. Good folks are hard to find - if they realize that - you'll be running the whole place in a few years.

Congrats, Tardis on your new adventure of work. I wish you the best of luck at your new job.

As much as I wanted out of the limo industry I knew I would miss certain aspects of it. I didn't work in a cubical, I was outside in the city with the most beautiful weather, the other drivers I worked with, and the people I got to meet along the way.

My new job was acquired much the same way. A friend, DieselGeek, heard they were looking for a new product specialist/tech adviser type of guy and he threw my name at them. I only had two phone interviews, one with the president and one with the customer service manager, and they hired me. Although DG says he didn't much cheerleading for me, I think he did a bit more than he says. My writing here certainly helped out. Not sure if the references I gave were called.
