    Stupid stupid fuel pump! rant

You all know that I love the Cherokee! A few weeks ago I drove it on a 200 mile round trip to pick up some materials for Loren. When I exited the freeway on the first leg of the trip I heard such a loud humming sound! I thought for sure it wasn't my car it had to be somebody else! When the light turned green and I allowed the traffic to sort of dissipate around me it became all too clear it was my beloved moaning! Holy Crap! 100 miles from home and my mission yet to accomplish. I picked up the material and the gas was rather low so I stopped and filled up for the ride home. The noise was gone...but when I pulled up at our house it was back as I came to a stop. There was still plenty of gas but the noise was back. Loren explained to me that the 8 month old fuel pump was on its way out and gently advised me that running the car low on gas makes the fuel pump heat up and wrecks it. As I was searching for a new fuel pump a Jeep dealer service manager also gently explained this to me adding that he has explained this to his wife as well.
I ended up going back to O'Rielly and having them replace the Airtex one that went bad with a Precision one. Seemed like a good idea to not use the same brand. Loren did all the work it took to put in the new one and it was much louder than the one that had gone bad! I could hear it up by the house when the car was running. He tested the pressure and did a few other things and it all seemed to be fine except for the amount of noise it was making. Back to trying to find out what the problem was I read many Jeep peoples comments on various forums. The comments ranged from, "that means the pump is about to fail", to "they all run that loud". One guy however said he had gotten a Bosch pump and had no problems. I contacted Summit and talked to their tech guy and eventually ended up getting the Bosch. It did cost more by about 40 bucks. But it works! It is quiet! They also threw in a nice hat and quality t-shirt for 9.95! My concern here is why do the neighborhood auto parts stores sell such CRAP!? How do they get away with it year after year?
That awkward moment when you realize it IS your circus and those ARE your monkeys!

Because the majority of auto-driving Americans are complete imbeciles.

Not to mention knuckleheads. And they don't know nothin'.

But seriously - a lot of folks are just after (in this case) a fuel pump that pumps fuel and don't care if it makes a racket. And the extra $40 for the Bosch seems like a luxury to them. Penny wise and pound foolish but that's how a lot of people see it.

I had an Airtex pump (Gm TBI replacement) that survived as a lift pump in my dodge diesel truck for 200,000+ miles. I disagree with SBG's notion that "auto parts stores sell crap because most people are imbeciles" though. I don't think most people are imbeciles, I believe only arrogant idiots think that way. Instead I'd blame the people who import parts and don't understand proper quality control. But that's just my opinion

after working at a parts store I'd not put an air tex in anything.. this is one part that if I am keeping the vehicle.. I'd spring for an oem pump . most times you can get them online for less than the airtex junk.. for jeep it be moparparts.com or rock auto..

Since no OEMs make their fuel pumps for discontinued vehicles anywhere but overseas including Bosch - and by Overseas I mean China or India - my personal opinion is, buying OEM in this case makes no sense. Just my opinion, of course I never worked at a parts store

I've ran an airtex pump in the Skylark since Drag Week 2011 because I figured using the $20 junkyard pump that had been on there since 2009 was pushing my luck Now that junkyard pump is the spare for the Skylark and Firebird. Oh, and I installed the airtex in the Firebird and a second one staged up in the Skylark. I've seemed to of bet the house on airtex pumps

I stand behind the counter and sell those pieces of shit every day. Airtex is the low dollar pump brand most store wil have in inventory.

                              BECAUSE THEY ARE INEXPENSIVE.

Unfortunately, 99% of people shop strictly on price. SO... ALL the auto parts chains are forced to carry numerous products like this that are purely shit. I bet I get 1 customer per day returning those crappy pumps. If you want reliability, buy Bosch. or Delco and pay a bunch more.

and that's the way it is.

A lifetime warranty is no good if you spend your life replacing the parts...............
