  • Pictures from the Road America Vintage event

Hey guys, wanted to share a few pictures from this weekends Vintage Roadracing event at Road America.
A large contingent of this crowd is the Porsche wine and cheese bunch, but there is also plenty of stuff for American v8 fans, and just about anything under the sun.
The diversity of cars in incredible and range from can-am cars to minis. On Friday night some cars are selected to drive on public roads from the race track to the small town of Elkhart Lake where there is a car show ‘till about 8:30, on the way out there are a few black ribbons left on the road which are accompanied by some of the best music around if you know what I mean.
There is activity at the track from Thursday to Sunday. Some from this site have been to an event like this but I suspect most have not. I would fully recommend giving it a try.
Below are a few pictures from Friday night’s event.

    On the way in

    How many of these remain?

Can Am, the rules are, “there are no rules”.

    I’ve seen this somewhere before?

    The boss, used properly.

    Durability.

    The only AMC in attendance.

    Penske Can Am

One of the neatest hoodscoops ever

    When men were men!

    On the way out.

    More to come!
    Cheers
    Mike

Great pics. Pretty cool that they run the cars right through town too. Road America is on my list of tracks to visit before I die. ;D

Before the track was built, the races actually went through the town!

Chapter 2: AAR Cuda. One of my all time favorite cars. I haven’t seen this in the flesh (metal) before so I was excited to get up close. It is incredible how many modifications have been made.

On the picture below notice the rear wheel openings slightly flared, beautiful!

On this picture, notice the “retainer” device on the front wheel, what is it? Anybody?

On this picture you can see the use of an upper torque link that likely reduces spring wrap etc, I wish I could have gotten pictures of the bottom of the car! Also note that this “Race Car” still has trim around the window opening, door handles, and rear quarter windows.

Under-hood - Wow, where do you start? 1. Oil drain-back from the side of the valve cover to the pan. 2. Boxed area under the shock mount. Etc, etc, etc.

              More on the way.
              Mike

Chapter 3: Variety is one of the best parts of this event.
Below is an “old” Benetton F1 car.

                  And a Bentley

I have always liked these, the German Bat mobile!

Shelby brought a few cars too…

Here are the TA cars lining up for qualifying on Saturday. Lets get ready to rumble! That white Pontiac would hit something in this session, I was not quick enough to get a pic but the frontend damage was pretty ugly.

                  That is all, carry on.

Wow....That looks like an awesome time. I will have to try and make it to a vintage event soon.

                    Thanks again for the pics.

Yup, same as Watkins Glen in New York. I drove the old roads at the Glen that they used to race on. Then I decided that the drivers from the 50s had way larger cojones than I ever did when I was racing. ;D

                      cheers

Great stuff! They run the same kinds of cars at the Monterey Historic Auto races out here on the west coast every August. I've been 4 times and it's always a great event.
Just groovin' to my own tune.
