View a small glimpse of the early years in racing scene. Now known as National Association of Stock Car Automobile Racing, it was at first, a way of 'Earning...
The driver with the dark round sunglasses in the second video is Red Byron. He was pretty successful in the early days, but was not from the south but, I believe from Colorado. He was hurt pretty bad during WWII but still returned to drive following the war. He had to sort of clip his foot on the clutch pedal because his left lane had been damaged so much that he couldn't lift that foot up and down all through a race. There is a great book that actually has some of the pictures from these videos in it. It Driving with the Devil by Neal Thompson.
my favorite videos on the beach was curtis turner's power slides in a 50s ford
not much video of all that I guess
goldsmith in smokeys pontiac winning the last beach race in 58
....but scary! Some of these old pictures/videos make all the crashes look like everybody just walked away, but they didn't. No one was safe drivers, crews, or spectators. Still, I love to look at that old stuff. Maybe its just because I'm getting old and relate to that stuff a little more than what's happening in racing today. Thanks for the original posting of the links.
