      • With no skin in the Super Bowl (again?) we took advantage of the cleared-out (!) roads and countryside and went for a drive. About 30 miles of this kinda stuff, only had it in 4/low once in the hills.

        Mud curdles.

Some water from recent rains still remains. Home is on the other side of those most distant mountains.

            • Ha...if I ever find a place where I get the last word, I'm moving there...

Cell phone coverage is pretty good in Anza-Borrego, if you're not down in some kind of canyon. Signals travel pretty well over flat desert and they don't need too many towers. About a third of this whole area is an off-road park that can get pretty busy with nutty drivers especially on holiday weekends and there was enough demand with people needing to stay in touch, find each other's campsites, and uh, call ambulances. New Year's eve it seems like there's an ambulance siren within hearing distance every couple hours.

Further out in the desert things can get spotty. It's good to not be further away from civilization/other's campsites than what you're willing to walk (I'm still good for a hike), and don't do any of this in summer heat.

Only once in the (Nevada) desert did I have to deal with what I suspected was criminal element, of course you're on your own there but in that case I was able to help them change their minds about being interested in us. It is better to travel with a group when possible, but going out on Superbowl Sunday when most of the country is at home I think we were looking for more solitude.

              • Saw this on a bumper sticker on Friday night.

What the heck is it? I can't even pronounce the word.

Of all the paths you take in life - make sure a few of them are dirt.

                  • I hate people, I hate people so much, there was literally nobody in front of my truck, this guy pulled in, then backed up almost all the way to my bumper, and there's somebody right behind me too.
Rumors of my demise by rollover have been greatly exaggerated.

been an interesting couple of weeks.
a glimpse of sun, and I just found we have been at 8F or less for almost 48 hours..
                      with snow falling.

when you average out a trip in your car, it ends up like 40mph, even after a forever 80mph cruise on a highway.
these cold spells going beyond the daytime, it is damn cold.

Gotta get my scripts going for the weather stats.
my last check was 31 of 62 days below freezing... must be at 40 for 70 or something by now.

Still a lot warmer than just 20 years ago. I think of this region as famous. All by itself.
