Wow. I wonder how many of those are "party lines"

and I wonder if you can get DSL on your existing copper there?

I think that kind of rigging is what happens after a few errant Hellfires find their way into the neighborhood. That's how I'd do it if I was the local telco in the Gaza strip :D

Yeah, because at any time you may be on your way to the "third world" without notice.

My head hurts when I think about un-F'ing that. I mean just wow.

Did anyone watch The Amazing Race last season? The teams went to a place like this and they had to walk down a block or two and try and follow a certian numbered power line to the end. Looks like a nightmare to me!

                    I can hear it now.....

                    Lineman- Which wire?
Foreman- The one on the left.

Lineman- Ummmm....Yeah can you be more specific.
Foreman- The one four wires left of the giant rats nest.

Lineman- Which giant rats nest? There are about a hundred.
Foreman- The one with rats actually living in it.

Lineman- Oh. By the way those rats aren't alive anymore.
Foreman- Well then toss them down. It's almost lunchtime.

                    Hahahaha

In a place like that, it's not a natural disaster. It's Mother Nature flushing.

Having actually been to India, and having a wife from there, I have to say that neither of us have ever seen anything like that in South India. Judging by what we can see in the pictures it looks to be up in the slums near Delhi or somewhere else in Uttar Pradesh (U.P. ain't just in Michigan). So you know most of your call centers are in South India in Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, nothing like that mess in Chennai or Bangalore I can tell you from personal experience. The grid is shaky, we lost power every other day for at least 30min and during a storm they just shut it down rather than risk something blowing up so most businesses have backup generators for the fridges and homes have UPS's on the computers and fridges against power spikes. Knowing my friend who has worked US tech support, I don't think it has so much to do with where the person answering is from as the person calling in most cases. Have you heard some people from Kentucky or deep Mississippi??
