  • 73 Maverick problem areas.

I'm supposed to go look at a 73 Mav tomorrow with a friend that he is interested in buying. Is there any problem areas that I need to look out for with these Ford unibody cars?

We all know how you feel about Fords, Spidey. I think justice would be you having to take a job a FoMoCo's dealership. lol.

Unfortunately that was the era of the really bad sheet metal for Ford, those Mavericks could get very rusty. As mentioned, same trouble areas as a Mustang, check the cowl area thoroughly.

My grandfather bought one brand new in 1972. Within about 3 years, the front fenders were just about ready to fall off from the rust. :o

My Dad had a '73. Just thoroughly check for rot all around the bottom of the car. One of my earliest memories (around 4 or 5, 1979 or 1980) was my Dad cutting out the bottom 6" of metal between the door jam and the rear wheel opening to replace it since most of it disappeared.

Pay special attention to the area around the Shock towers where they meet the frame. This is close to the engine mounts and takes a beating, ripped mine right out.
