  • Does Barret Jackson make you mad??

Lets be honest here weve all watched a few hours of Barret Jackson, and we all sort of enjoy watching people pay STUPID amounts of money for old cars. Much of wich is crowd provoked and alot of it has to do with a good old fashion "my dick is bigger than yours" showdown....Lately ive actually come to resent this show. In a big way. Its pretty much taken the price of old muscle cars up by about 500%. {"total guesstamate} Remember when you used to be able to get a decent project car for 2K? Thats laughable to think that now. That same "70' chevelle" or whatever that was for sale in 1999 for 2K is probably 10K now. Everything has changed and correct me if im wrong but alot of this has to do with the televised Barret Jackson stuff. Now everyone and their brother thinks... "well Reggie Jackson got 275K for a ZL-1 without the right motor in it! Well by god my p.o.s. rust box 69' Camaro has to be worth alot right??" ...Well the problem here is that people are actually paying these stupid prices for these cars again because they saw it on TV, so in their mind it justifies the money spent. This is a viscious cycle. Whats a first gen camaro go for now? seems like 20K for a good run of the mill driver. COME ON!!! Im just looking at the correlation here between the Barret Jackson boom on TV and the price of a decent project car......what say you? Am I out of line?? Discuss.....

Is that the old fart with the fancy mustache? That guy came to our "Back to the Bricks" In Flint Michigan, and spent hours filming this old car, FLINT TOWN IS RENOWNED FOR MUSCLE CARS AND STREET RACERS, I went over to his crew and said, you need to come over here to muscle alley and check out these cars with some POWER.....they didnt give us the time of day, not even a glance with the camera.....they didnt like me, this fancy pansy car they were filming for hours was right across from me, and I would jump in our Camaro now and then, and REV the engine up for some real SHOW POWER, and everyone would come over to our side of the road to check out the muscle cars....and they would have to shut down thier cameras, and start all over talking again......the whole Down Town area would Echo when I revved the engine up, thank god my husband was working on this day and not at the event, I would not have been able to play ;D

I'm pretty tired of the Barret-Jackson thing. It has a lot of folks believing that the old heap they have for sale is worth a small fortune. Gets pretty boring to watch as well.

I never watch it and can't give two shits about it, although guys with more money than penis seem to think the more they pay the bigger a man they are...

Barret Jackson sucks. Its all about money and thats the wrong reason for getting in to this hobby. It stupid how much air time it gets on speed. Who gives a rats a** what the rich guys can buy. What can you build yourself. Here in Windsor Ontario we have a growing number of check book hot rodders. It's very sad!

Re: Does Barret Jackson make you mad??

ive watched about five minutes of it. there were dodges on at the time, old musclecars that had been pimped out by some shop or another. they looked like total crap, huge wheels, stupid looking modifications. some rich guy was bidding on em like they were made of gold.. if it makes him happy i suppose. personally i cant fault a man for separating a fool from his money. if a guy wants to pay a fortune for a pimped out old dodge, im only sad that i wasnt in on the scam myself somehow. that auction wont threaten the beaters i like, the old fox bodies! my next project will be a tan fox body, maybe a cougar or tbird, with four headlights.. of course itll be packing underhood, but on the outside itll look like i borrowed grandma's car...

Re: Does Barret Jackson make you mad??

I enjoy it as a car show. That's about it. When I saw a 65 Impala SS vert go for 125 grand last year made me a nervous wreck about mine.

Though the constant shots of Magnante's plumber's crack as he crawled under cars looking for Dana 60's was a bit much.

Re: Does Barret Jackson make you mad??

I guess I, like Rebeldryver, looked at it as a car show the first time I saw it on. I think the first time I saw the full coverage I watched it for a few days in awe at how beautiful some of the cars were.
Mostly it makes me mad because it has driven the price of muscle era cars through the roof. Even things with body pannels rusting off cost 3 times what they would have a few years ago because people are convinced you can turn it into a numbers matching hundred plus thousand dollar barret mobile.
But the auction is not at all the only cause or example of what's been going on.

Re: Does Barret Jackson make you mad??

I read somewhere they were in trouble for supposedly inflating the prices by putting their own cars thru and bidding the price way up so when another identical car came thru everybody would bid high because they just saw one go for a really high price.

I haven't heard anything else about that but I did hear the prices at their last auction weren't as high as normal.

I find it really boring. They always hype how much money they made, like I care about it.
Jay Leno always does his research and pays a fair price, not some inflated buying frenzy price.Maybe that's one reason he has so many vehicles. He does it like I would.

Looks like he did a damn nice job restoring the Cuda though.

Auctions are making it expensive to drive and insure old cars. My father-in-law has a numbers matching 70 Chevelle SS396 4spd Convertible that he bought new in 1970 for $3800. See Pic>>> http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...o/Chevelle.jpg
He restored it in 2001, and had it insured for $30,000-$40,000 through Haggerty for about 4 years. This year Haggerty has raised the value of the car to $75,000, due to recent auction sales which they claim have increased his cars market value. He thinks it's great, but I don't think he realizes from now on his rates will only go up, up, and up, and soon enough the car will be too expensive to drive.
