  • Steve Fossett (Found)

After 13 Months, the mangled debris of the plane was spotted in the air late Wednesday near the town of Mammoth Lakes South of Carson City Nevada. Various Body Parts were also recovered after the investigations started. A hiker found Identification laying along a trail and notified authorities.

It was amazing how many times the area was passed over by the Civil Air Patrol and other searchers.

HE will be missed I'm sure.

Sad news, not suprising, at least we finally know what happened to him.

At least there is closure now.

As a fello pilot... I followed this quite a bit at the time... the outcome is actually pretty good... least we know it wasn't protracted or ugly...

I can sure think of worse ways for a pilot to go, my mom's second husband passed away from Lou Gehrig's disease this summer. He few Mustangs in the war.

Itīs still pretty odd what happened there.
First off he took a plane he was not fond of,
second he did not let his regular guy check it out.
No parachute and minimum supplies, one bottle of water.
He was supposedly looking for a site to attempt the land
speed record, surely most suitable sites are well known.

They report a high speed impact, so if he was just tooling
around the sky scouting how could that happen, almost
              horizontal into a mountain ?

A sad loss of a guy who didīnt even start his record
accumulating career until 55 years of age.
Apparently no one in the Guiness Book of Records comes
              anywhere near him.

It was Richard Branson who "speculated" he was looking for a place to test his car project - not the plane's owner or Steve Fossett himself. (I can't stand Sir Richard")

There's nothing weird about hopping in a Citabria or Decathlon for a quick trip around the mountains. I *believe* Fossett already had a Letter of Authorization from the FAA which means he doesn't need a checkride into fly most types of aircraft, and this one is a popular aerobatics trainer...

I see nothing that would imply anything other than a typical accident that's very common in that part of the country... yet the conspiracy theorists seem to keep coming up with more exciting stories. :

                  Re: Steve Fossett (Found)

I've flown there, my brother-the-pilot lived in Mammoth Lakes for a while. The wind off the backside of the Sierras can suck. I hate it, it's like being a duck in the air right after a semi-truck goes by.

Was it a high-speed impact? Sounds like it, for debris to be spread like that. At least when you go down in the mountains (and you're under control) you come in slow and pull up looking to stall right before you hit. Who's to say what happened at this point.

I was talking to a few of the National Guard out here in Reno/Sparks Area. They spent nearly 4 Months of (on and off) Flights over the entire area. They never searched the Area that the wreckage was found. Going on what they were told, that He was looking for an area to make a Record Attempt, surely changed the Search Area. The National Guard Deployed to Afganistan the Day before the Wreckage was found. I'm sure they will be happy to know the Search is finally over. The Guard could have used the FLIR Systems that we are installing on thier Aircraft during those Searches. They did find numerous other Crash Sites all around the area during these searches, putting many other Investigations Closed.

Looks like they've confirmed that it was indeed Fossett's remains.
