Re: It is 1970's all over again...

It's just a thought. The late-'70s provided some of the lightest and best platfoms in my opinion: Ford's Fox and Panther platforms, GM B and A/G bodies, and (laugh all you want) the Mopar M's for RWD, the Mopar K-based coupes and P-bodies, GM X-cars and J-bodies, the Escort/EXP for FWD, and if you've got a sick twist, you could always Northsatr a Fiero. Engines were mediocre, but the platform is not only proven, but they can be drastically improved upon.

Just ideas flowing through my head, that's all.

Did those "ideas" flow from a brown or green bottle, buddy?

      LOL.....just bustin' yer chops.

I DO wonder what a supercharged Aurora mill would do in a Fiero.....or a complete blown 3800 front-drive Bonneville drive train into a Citation(laugh now.....done right, the joke would be on the fartcan kid that egged the individual on).

      An LS7 in a grandma-fresh 78-79 Malibu 4-door would be a scream.....poverty caps, and painted-on whitewalls....bench seating, crappy paint........

I've always liked the body styles. Yes, they are heavy, but not any heavier than what's being built today.
I've got the answer...my left leg has one helluva bruise from leaving it open on my driveway during a quick in-out visit at my house. Hurts like hell. I'll admit, the fiberglass hood saved quite a bit of weight off of it, and there's several people who've hollowed-out the front bumpers on these and tucked them in...look at Blazerteam's 'Velle.

          For comparison:

2006 Monte Carlo SS curb weight: 3,487 lbs
1973 Chevelle base coupe: 3,470 lbs

          Hmm...
Losing the bumper shocks and moving the front bumper in is always an improvement. I once did it on a 73 Impala.

          after: Much better.

Much better Rebel. Its just the corners of the bumper that should have been modified.

There are a lot of things that can be done to a overlooked 70ies car.Shaving of weight and gettin better performance and looks, must be a win win situation.

My Chevelle was 3968 lbs when i started shaving weight.Removed the inner structure from the bumpers front and rear, and got new seats. The original 3 seater in front was HEAVY..

Now it weighs 3568 circa. All iron 350 and steel wheels.

With me and full tank of gas,its almost to what i started with.. 3943.

A lot of weight. But it is comfy for the highway, and doesnt drink too much gas.18-20mpg highway.

And ive done my share in working on light cars. You have to lift the engine to get sperk plugs out,and headers...dont start me..

Laguna's, 442's, SE Grand Prix's, any of those with an LS would be a sweet car, IMO.

IIRC the Magnum claims that title, 400BB for '78. Not sure about '79.
