My favorite import is the air cooled VW's. Simple, light, easy to work on, and at the time, very affordable.

They also made kickass platforms for dunebuggies!

Heck ya, Rx7. That'd work. How fast will it go for 1900.00 worth of mods? I'm trying to stay out of the BS zone on parts. They'll come from ebay, craigslist, junkyard, but no 50.00 ball bearing turbo good-guy deals. Grin. What could your average joe (that'd be ME) go out and buy / build.

That'd be an import that interested me.

what the heck kind of domestic are you going to build for $2500?!?!?

the Fairmont that parish and team built for Pinks is the CHEAPEST domestic I've ever heard of, at a cost of about $4000 to duplicate using a ton of ebay parts. We're pushing the 5.3 in that engine with a turbo off a backhoe, to it's absolute max on stock parts, it's been 9.49 at the quarter mile. That's with some very careful tuning too.
I love that car. LOVE IT. I loved his comments in the article, too.

9.49 for 4k is dirt cheap and way fast in my book. I aspire to be that great some day. For now, I'm just looking to get kicked off the track for no roll bar, and want to do it for 2500.00. I'm curious what the average import guy could do for the same price... not for arguments sake, just want to know.

beagle how fast do you want to go for 2500
Honest expectations? 12 something. But - 11.4 would make me happy. Getting booted would make me happy. I'd probably cry if it went 10.99.

          3300 pounds with driver.
this is possible for under 5 grand easily if you have a good platform to start with. hell probably closer to 3500 if you got a cheap car.

          one thing to add

you can add a standalone for 400-600 bucks (ok scott, its less than that if you build it your self i know). this will help you achieve better repeatable performance.

I live in Kansas, so technically, I guess my favorite import comes from Colorado.....

Back to the thread......I really like the VWs too. For the same reasons. I am not familiar with the 4-banger the dragster has......Ecotec....where do they come from? Find 'em in a junkyard? Like I said, I'm from Kansas.......;)

                Thanks for saying that.

I'd build an Olds before I'd build any 4 banger.
I don't care what kind of power you can make with em, they sound like shit,
                and make squat for torque.

I don't get the torque comment. We'll usually get the same torque number as HP, or within 80% of peak HP depending on what RPM it comes on. I won't disagree with you on the sound, however. nothing beats the v8 sound.

                      Re: Anybody care about imports?

                      As in, low end torque.

                      And Shaun-bite me.
I like imports, some anyway, I just can't get into the sound.

Just like I hate V-twins, they sound horrible.
Not taking anything away from those who like em,
                      just I don't.

On the other comment Shaun, after almost 30yrs. wrenching professionally, and building engines,
NONE of my comments are useless.
