Saw that this morning too. IMO, a huge waste of taxpayers' money. These companies are managed so poorly, and the UAW is so deep into Detroit's shorts... the bailout is only prolonging the inevitable.
The government has the option to become a shareholder in these companies. Personally, I don't want the government owning anything in the private sector. That's a step towards socialism, folks.Nitrous, baby!!...

Maybe it will light some fire under their ass to change their ways a little (the mfg's). I still dont believe its the product so much as the fact its hard for some people to get a car loan now. I know two guys that work for Honda and their sales are way down too.

Disagree with the above. I think they waited until the last second to send them a message. I think it was a message to management and the UAW that "were not messing around here boys, you guys are going to come together and figure out how to make this work" I think that the message was heard. If they do not figure out what has to happen by March then i think they will be sinking their own ship. No American actually wants the giant american icons to die do they?

It was better this way, because now the auto makers won't have to put up with the ridiculous demands that congress would have put on them. And I can't believe I'm saying this, but G.W. finially did something right. :o

Re: No discussion of auto loans being approved?
So, no later than 3/31/09, the U.S. government is going to determine whether or not GM and Chrysler have met certain concessions and determine if the two companies are financially viable? God help us.
What's next? With the gov't having the potential to become a substantial shareholder... will the gov't demand a seat on the Board of Directors? If the gov't becomes a shareholder... how will it vote in proxy elections? Who determines how the gov't, as a shareholder, should vote?
IMHO, the gov't has its nose and pocketbook where it doesn't belong.
Scary sh*t!Nitrous, baby!!...
