    yeah, it is, and it's the only one I've ever seen. Works for pushing pistons out too.

      I had to make my own flywheel puller for my STIHL chain saw
      when I tore it down to rebuild it last winter .
      That tool worked like a charm and is definitly staying .

        That's an interesting guess. The jaws expand and could compress a spring against something (spring retainer maybe?). There is a ratchet involved that holds the jaws apart. You couldn't actually compress a spring between the jaws.

        Is that how a door spring compressor works?

          The spring compressor that I have in my box has a bolt through the center and tightening the bolt compresses the spring. It is more useful for installing door springs. here is a picture:
