Got mine 1968 went to Springfield,MA for physical. No parking lot so needed to park to on the street at a meter. 2 hrs. later when your meter run out you're standing in undies and they won't let you go put more money in. Come outside after done and everyone got a $10 parking ticket. The Army didn't make a good first impression on me lol

Nope, the draft was ended by the time it was my time. I did volunteer and served 9 years all said and done.

        Re: Greeting

        Ah......the draft.

I avoided that........joined my senior year, 1967, of high school
        when I was 17.
Two weeks after graduation I was in boot camp...buddy of mine and I
        went in together.
Navy had a program back then we called 'Kiddy Cruisers'......went in at 17 and got out
        before your 21st birthday.

Always wanted to be a Seabee........a great outfit.

Funny though......I did go register when I was on leave, just to be
sure Uncle Sam didn't come lookin for me.

            Re: Greeting

Missed it by a few years but want to, seriously, thank you guys for serving the country. The military is the reason we now can all sit here and enjoy America and the freedom lifestyle. Including the brave soles fighting over there (Middle East) now. Plus from around the world ready for action.

                Re: Greeting

I was born about 4 years too late for the draft....but I did get to work for the Army as a civilian for six years. Interesting stuff. The experience gave me a lot of respect for the folks in uniform.

                    Re: Greeting

I'm a little to young for the draft, was born in 1969. And was sure glad that when I turned 18 there wasn't one. Don't get me wrong I support all of our troops and the decisions they have made to put their lives on the line to insure our freedom, but the military is not a place for me(I bow to no man). And I guess the biggest problem I have is I will not take another human's life, so why should I put myself in the situation to where that would happen. It's kind of like when your hanging out with a group of guys and they say lets go do a bunch of crack and go rob a liquor store, I tend to say, "have fun with that" I got other things to do. And do realize that every American is part of our military, as it is our tax money that makes it possible for the military to exist, so maybe I don't personally fight the wars, but I do fund them so that they are possible.

                      Re: Greeting

During the Viet Nam era, in our small neck of the woods, coming of high
                      school you had three choices.
Go to college and get a deferment
Go to work and wait for the draft, many went to St. Louis
and worked at the car plants
                      Or just join.
Part of my decision to join was to support my buddies
                      that went before me.
                      We weren't followers but supporters.

The military was good for me, gave me direction and discipline & I served
with a great outfit. I wore the uniform with pride.

Thanks for the 'thanks' from you guys, we didn't get that back then.

                      Unfortunately.......freedom isn't free

I also filled out the selsctive service card when I turned 18. Younger guys in their 20's (I'm 36) don't know anything about this it seems, so I wonder if they are still sending those cards out?
