Re: 1920 Board track racing -- Motorcycles!
Many times those tracks were used for many different kinds of racing. Cars, motorcycles and even bicycles. As has been alluded to earlier the board tracks were the best alternative for a track surface considering what else was available. I doubt a dirt track could have been made with that kind of banking. The banking, of course, allowed higher speeds.
If I remember correctly the Smith Collection (the museum at Speedway Motors) has some pictures and a display designed around a board track setting.
