  • bonneville 2008

Hi this will be my 1st year on the salt, we are coming up on the 1st and from what I have read so far it is the day to try and book a room, any suggestions on a decent room where I can feel safe about leaving my 34 in the parking lot. It is not a fancy rod but Its the 1st one I built and hope to never part with. any suggestions will be appreciated as I know at least a few of you (Turk and Frieburger) are long time salties if that name is appropriate.
    Thanks Joe

I'd recommend either the Rainbow or the Nugget... Monteraybay is fine too...

Any of these places are fine to leave your junk outside... the Nugget has the car show's every night of Speedweek with the biggest being that first Saturday night...

There is security in every lot.... and the Nuggert has underground parking... so after you've destroyed your car on the salt you can keep it from getting wet.. LOL... I'm not kidding.. your going to Rust EVERYTHING shut... it's not a nice thing this Salt stuff...

Keith is correct.I've been going since 1969.The salt will destroy your car!Park at the end of the road, and hitch a ride.
I saw pic's of a certain Model A driving thru this years lake, and later for sale on ebay.I feel sorry for the buyer.

        Re: bonneville 2008

Hi thanks for the replies Im not to concerned about getting salt on my 34 as it will be coming apart for a rebuild as soon as I get back. I built it in 1999 and finaly have it where I want it. I cant take my dream road trip and not drive the salt. I know it sounds cliche to those who have been going for a long time but this truly is my trip of a life time and hopefully not the last to speed week. If anyone else is going from washington state and wants to convoy let me know I will be leaving on the friday before and arriving on midday sat. if my calculations are right.
        Thanks Joe

They are doing things alittle different this year. Tech is on a Sunday Aug 17th with racing starting on Monday the 18th ......SO, I would imagine that the drivers meeting is that Monday morning, 10am-ish.

True. They did that to help coordinate more non-weekend hotel rooms with the casinos.

I would expect the driver's meeting to be earlier than that. This year we were in position on the course by around 8 and they were racing by 9 if I remember correctly.

Yes, at the drivers meeting last year the guy that own/manages the big casinos said they would not be booking any golf outings, keno/poker tournments or anything else the week of Speed Week and that Wendover will be once again be SPEED WEEK, and only Speed Week, like it use to be.

I am going to attend my first Speed Week this year. From a spectator's standpoint who can't attend the entire week (3 to 4 days) what day should I arrive? Any other hints for making the most of this past-due experience?

                          Re: bonneville 2008

totaly stoked I finaly got a room for speedweek it may be an hour away in wells but I got one after calling everything in wendover, so the journey begins today now to finish putting the 5 speed in the 34 chevy it has a t350 now w/3.73 gears and 27 inch cheater slicks it runs about 3400 rpm on the freeway so the 5 speed will be nice for the trip. the last thing I have to do now is fab the clutch pedal and linkage, a combo of a cut apart and rewelded bell crank from an early truck and custom made pedal assembly I would post pics but for some reason I can never get them to work on this site. the 5speed is a wc from a 4.3 chevy yea yea I know I cant hammer on it but it should make the trip fine it is going behind a mild 350/dual quads the car and engine are set up to look like a 60s drag car. well so much for my rambling.
and again if anyone from washington is going and wants to convoy let me know I am in chehalis wa.

Make sure to be there the first two days. That's when the huge retro-rod cruise-in happens at the Nugget in Wendover. Also, the good racing happens early. By midweek everyone will have blown up their junk.
