Re: Rumors are funny!sometimes
I learned about rumors the summer I took drivers ed. On the last day my instructor, who was also my gym teacher asked me to check the fluids on our car. It was a 83 Nissan Stanza four door hatchback that was owned by the school board and it had a governor on it that prevented it from going faster than 53 mph. So there I was staring at the governor and it's adjusting screw. Well, the demon in me, speed demon most likely, convinced me to "adjust" it so the car can actually keep up with traffic. So I adjusted it. And, adjusted it again, and again until the screw fell out and disappeared somewhere under the car.
At this point, Mr Muma comes out and tells me and my driving partners to get in the car. I was the first to drive and drive I did. I turned down this two lane highway that had a long steep hill. When I got to the bottom of the hill; I noticed a State Patrol car sitting behind a billboard. That's when I noticed the speedometer. It was pegged at the 85 mph mark. Um, that's bad. Mr. Muma was too busy reading the racing form to notice me or the cop until he heard the siren behind us. My driving partners were no help sitting in the back seat going "ooooooohhh, your in soooo much trouble".
I ended up in less trouble than Mr Muma, at least from the State Trooper, for doing 87 in a 55. Mr Muma was less forgiving. The next day I left with my Dad on a road trip to Washington DC and was out of town for three weeks.
When I got back, the rumor mill had elevated me to cult hero status. "Oh, I heard you out ran the police." Oh, I heard you ran through a road block." There were many more rumors. All were just as moronic. Looking back, I should've just revelled in my new notoriety, but I spent the rest of the summer trying to disspell all those rumors. I still ended up notorious.BS'er formally known as Rebeldryver

Festiva story. Old friend of mine likes to drive crappy FWd cars. Buys 2 junk festivas for $50. We are taking the good(?) motor out of one so we roll it onto its side. Gas leaks out. Hot wrench sends sparks on ground. Fire starts. Whole car is in flames in 30 sec. Friend grabs bucket of water that half full of used oil. Fire is bigger now. Grass is on fire. 39 Stude parts car that is next to festiva is on fire now. Neighbor see's smoke, thinks that I have blown my self up calls 911. 3 fire trucks, 2 cops and the fire Chief show up as the fire is burning out, except tires of course. I get a 20 min lecture on fire saftey. Wife shows up and starts to laugh at site of Fire Chief yelling at me. New rule at my shop is no festivas and My friend has lost his hot wrench priviliges. The stude looks the same but the festiva collapsed when they sprayed it with high pressure!

^^^ ;D :D :^^^ now that's funny!
We hear rumors all the time about the Chevelle. The most recent one came after this year's power tour. One of the gals in our Camaro club asked if we had the Chevelle fixed yet. Knowing she hadn't heard about the fender bender, I asked "what?" They had heard we had a fire under the dash and the car was destroyed. Another time this same gal asked how much we got for the Chevelle, because she had heard from a "reliable" source that we had sold the car. NOT!!! :P Had a guy call us from the east coast to say he had seen the Chevelle in a show there. I told him it wasn't our car, it's in the garage. He had seen the Chevelle from Eaton. Duh! :o

My roommate is pretty upset that he lost the boosted Cobra's in the fire.
This story and the names involved just reminded me a lot of this post since the names and cars were all very similar. lol

Re: Rumors are funny!sometimes
this reminds me that I need to have someone on hand with a garden hose and fire extinguisher when I start cutting up the old van that's been behind my shop way too long....
it started as a free powertrain donor
and has turned into a somewhat mobile storage facility....
I don't remember what I was going to use the 302/aod/9" for, but, I do remember robbing the bumper off the back and building brackets to make it fit the '88F250 I sold.
no - DF - you don't want it, it's a midwest van - rust holes in several places you could put your fist through.
I think I'll load it on my trailer to go to the scrap yard with my old towmotor by putting the forks right through the side --- I've always wanted to do that to a car! There's always something new to learn.
