Back then they ran almost every engine combo there was, V-12's, flat-12's, normally aspirated V8s, twin turbo V6's and BMW's 1.5 litre turbo 4 cyl. that made 1000 horsepower. The sound of them blasting past us banging through fully manual gearboxes was incredible! ;D
I almost forgot, I have a picture of the start, the best part of the whole race!

Just groovin' to my own tune.

Re: What, with an engine, moves YOU?

This is the kind of stuff that does it for me:

      a turbine engine go-kart

      Or this:

a home-made jet engine powered shopping cart.

I like the freaks who use their brain and their cajones to create and drive these crazy contraptions.

Well speakin of bikes and the thread topic..........while not an engine, but
I remember when we were racin moto cross back in the early '70's, a bike came out
          with an automatic transmission.
One showed up at the track one weekend and I was like blowed
          away by it.
Anyone remember what the make was?

Monk I beleive that it was KTM in the yearly 70s.
Keep smiling, makes them wonder whats on your mind.

Re: What, with an engine, moves YOU?

Of all the engine noises I've heard, the sound an LM-2500 mechanical drive gas turbine make during start-up moves me the most.
First you hear the air starter straining as it slowly windes the turbine up for 60 seconds or so, then you hear the high voltage ignitor sparking off, then the combustors ignite with a low rumble and finally the turbine throttles up its full 25,000 hp @ 9,000 rpm. It is especially "moving" if said 25,000 hp gas turbine is bolted to the deck of an offshore oil platform. You can feel the power through your vibrating feet. ;D
The CF6-6 flight version of this turbine just doesn't make the same noises and neither does the generator drive version.

Here is one installed offshore Nigeria

Here is one after a $1M overhaul

Here is a cut-a-way of one

Re: What, with an engine, moves YOU?

Man, so many things to choose from....I can't cut and paste on the browser I use here but....here are 2 that treally get me goign

I am a T56A15 engine specialist....these are what powers most of the C130's in the air force...the sound of 4 of these 4K hp engines running at max power...while I am controlling the throttles is a bit of a rush....I will never fly one but ground ops is the next best thing

Second......I got to hear a true 427 Shelby Cobra run at a Sheby display at a F1 race at INDY few yeras back and the sound of that car has stayed with me since...it gave me goose bumps

Third...the idle tone of my fury......I will start it and just stand behind it to listen to it idle...it makes me smile ....its even better at WOT....but that don't happen often.....it atteacts attention.....the unwanted kind

I gotta ask, for those that work on jet and turbine engines, Do piston engines seem like cave man toys?

The basics of my engine and prop go back to pre 1955.....no not really I think the piston engine is harder to understand and more complex in some ways....the jet engines are super simple......compressor the air. Direct the air. Mix the air with fuel and burn it....that energy turns a turbine and that turbine creates thrust or torque depending on the application.....its cake.........all that crazy compresion, bore size stroke, heads how they flow, cam size all that is greek when it gets realy technical
