  • Automotive home remedies...

I brought up in another thread that I used Coke to remove battery acid. Stoneshrink said you can use Coke to remove bugs from windshields. That got me thinking, what other strange home remedies do you guys have for doing different things on cars?

And before anybody else says anything about it..... we all know an Orange Julius will cure whatever ails ya.... or your car.

I know a guys neighbor that put out a pan with antifreeze in and his
black lab died that very day . He had been warning him to keep the dog
from running over to their place.
      Thats just nasty .

Because I do paint and body work I have a selection of potions from which to choose. Lacquer thinner is GREAT stuff. Best I've found for getting impossible stuff off glass - like tree sap, adhesive, etc. The WD40 for removing tar from paint works well, but leaves it damn tough to paint over. If I might have to paint the area, I'll use solvent (naptha) from the parts washer.

A couple that come to mind -

The nice thing about WD 40 is that if you get tar on your hands it doesn't tear the heck out of your hands taking the tar off (after all, it's simply cod liver oil)

Black pepper and an egg white to seal a leaking radiator.

I'd heard of it, and one time I had a chance to try it. It works.

Then there's the candle wax on seized nuts and bolts that was mentioned in another thread. That works too.

Lacquer thinner will cure nearly anything. It can even heal wounds.

Whenever I'd get all covered in Pine sap as a kid my mom would have me use butter as soap to loosen the sap and then wash with normal hand soap...worked like a charm on hands. Dunno about paint.

True, Gene, laquer thinner does heal wounds, but not before stinging like crazy! Plus, I heard a rumor that laquer thinner is byproduct of.... Orange Julius who is made by.. yep you guessed it.... SAMSONITE.

I have also used a orange pumus soap to get primer off of paint. I just rubbed the soap on with my hand and it ate right through the primer.
