    Flat plane crank 5.2L V8.

I hope they didn't just shoot themselves in the foot by offering an oddball engine in it.

That was kind of my thought, or more along the lines of I hope they don't run into a durability issue.
      Escaped on a technicality.

Alright, I'll fess up to my ignorance. I had to look into flat plane cranks to find out what you guys were talking about. Turns out I knew it already, I just didn't know I knew it. Know what I mean?

It's got me thinking though. Can you put a flat plane crank in an engine designed for a cross plane? Or are their architectural and structural differences with the blocks needed for each type?

Pretty decent write-up on the home page of SVTperformance. Looks like Fords answer to the current Z28.

I'm curious to see if this is Fords way to steer things away from the CrAzY horsepower wars we've been seeing....or will they bring out a 750hp GT500?

I was just joking of linear and how we interpret it.

little more than theory to group the mass together like that...

benz cranking will take over all of it.. but that is way ahead of myself.

chevy made one with the corvair, then kept it real wimpy in the valves...
it would have dominated even the biggest v8s otherwise.

excuses are running out. I am glad ford is having fun with difference.

I'd like that mustang a lot.

this quote shows that they are more similar to a benz crank firing.
This crankshaft design differs from traditional, American V-8 dogma by placing the connecting rods along the crank at 180-degree intervals, rather than the more traditional 90-degree positions. Doing so sets up the firing order to alternate between cylinders, which reduces exhaust overlap.
a benz crank does 180 intervals, 90 degree fire + exact reciprocation for self balance...

but the flat plane plays a good game...only little bit goofy versus a whole lot of goofy.
Also with the benz, 4.8+/- would go sailing by 6 liters....rpm for rpm..it would go right on by.

I doubt we've seen the last shot of the current horsepower wars.

Modern Ferrari V8's are flat cranks. I'm really impressed by the new car and given it is NA it will seemingly be matched with the Z28 which is a very high bar. I'm guessing the GT 500 is the hole card card for Hellcat's and ZL1's, expect turbo's and actual 10 second ET's.

Prolly last shot will be when th govmnt jumps in like they did back in the 70's... It was not just fuel mileage that killed the hp wars..

                      It was emissions.

IMO- if flat plane cranks were the cats meow, I would think that they would already be in use by the "American" auto makers. Maybe there is an issue with them that has recently been solved? They have a distinct sound and Ford taunts that the exhaust pulses, but is that a real advantage? I guess like any engine part, it will depend on the other parts that it is paired with.

My first impression was that this is a knee jerk reaction to the Hellcat. Since Ford can't match the horsepower, they added a few handling and braking novelties and a body kit and called it good. Kind of like what a ricer does when their Honda can't match an American car.
Why think when you can be doing something fruitful?

I don't think the Hellcat is this car's target. They have/had a GT500 for that.

Hellcat = brute power mainly focused on going in a straight line.

                            GT350 = a road race/track car aimed at Chevrolet's Z/28 package.

I don't know what the engineering appeal of a flat crank is, but apparently they like to rev.
