  • I have been slack when it comes to working on the car but I have really been slack with the updates! After tacking the down pipe I found out the DP was too close to the AC compressor. Cut some out of the up pipe. Started laying out the cold side and practice TIG welding. Been working alittle on the punch list for the lightning, got tags on it. Have only driven it once to the dump. Hope to drive it to work tomorrow. It seems to run pretty good, jury is still out on handling. But it is a 28 year old twin I-beam truck with 240k miles

    • When every steering joint is new, they do surprisingly well. Like you said, though, twin i-beam. I put a redhead power steering box on mine, but I did not get good mileage out of the Moog parts on my last front end rebuild, from the pitman arm, steering knuckle to steering knuckle, done at the same time... i beam bushings, the whole 9 yards. If it moved, it got replaced. Something like 25k later and it's kind of sloppy again. That and they are far from cushy. Crown vic front end would fix a lot of issues I think.

.more than likely I will leave that up to the next owner. I still want to drive it some more. I hate suspension work. So unless I fall in love, I am going to finish the punch list and then list it. I love the look but I don't need a full scale model.

        • I worked on the Lighting last night, doors and dash. Replaced the cable for the passenger side door handle, etc. Got the door panels back on. I was thinking about driving it to work today. So I drove it to the gas station for a splash and go. The road I live on is a little ruff, the steering requires some corrections, smoother road is not as bad, but it's no one finger Lincoln. I have to go pick the kids up after work so I decided to delay the truck to work just incase it doesn't go well. I am going to jack it up and take a look at the front end and shake stuff. The tires are older and wide, older shocks, hard parts? Any advice?

On a positive note the motor seems to run good slow roll to 45 is fun!

          • King Pins .....?
Jack up one side on the I beam, not the spindle, have someone slowly turn steering lock to lock, GREASE Top and BOTTOM zerks till New Grease comes out,
and a lot of it, you are purging the old grease out. (Put something down to catch the mess)
Repeat on other side, then do same on the cross link Tie Rod ends.
If the grease doesn't want to go in (Especially on the Bottom Zerks) get a torch, even a propane one, and heat it up,
(LOOK OUT HOT GREASE WILL START SPEWING OUT)
Petrified Old Grease in the King Pins will give you wonky steering on the old Twin I Beam suspensions ........

Late model I-beams are bearing type joints, not sure when exactly they got away from kingpins.... on it's best day when new it was still nowhere close to a strut/Rack and Pinion or a-arm truck for comfort or handling, but they did okay. Random internet picture with random red circles where the rubber wears out, not the point, but shows the bearing joint configuration anyway. I guess you would call them ball joints but they don't have to articulate quite like that.

and that picture just made me have bad memories. LOL... radius arm bushing replacement means pulling the springs and I'm not sure I've ever had to use a longer cheater bar than the front end of an F series.

              • I drove an '80 F-150 4wd alot it the late 90's I thought it did pretty good. I had a 95 in the mid 2000's they were both long beds with less miles not sure if it's just rose colored glasses looking back but I remember them requiring less steering input. I will get some grease in the front end. The power steering pump doesn't sound happy I might change the fluid. It has a good bit more get up and go than other F trucks I have driven.

I will look a little closer I thought the radius arm bushings looked good. I didn't look at the twin I beam pivots.

                • Do you mean like herding cats type input, it won't go in straight line? The short boxes are worse about that it seems. Either way, if the wheels are not in agreement about which way to turn because of linkage slop, it turns driving a fun truck into a chore. The long drag link bar was truly worn out on mine, may be worth crawling under it and watching the linkage with somebody moving the wheel back and forth. Mine was an "omg, can't believe I've been driving this impending disaster" kind of movement, pretty obvious.

                    • and in other rolls.... this should be titled "why there are no more Ford Escort Mk IVs"

for those who wonder why I've never been tempted to go back rally racing...

So far I have managed to keep the red side up. Don't ever plan on getting any where near 100. I ran it up to 70 for a split second (DEER!) on the back road with the windows down. Now I remember why I used to think 75 was fast

                        • Drove the lightning to work Friday. The majority of my drive is on the interstate. I keep my speed at 65-70 and it was not to bad. Didn't seem to really like it going 75. Motor runs great.

Beagle, what did you do to improve handling on your truck?

99% of me is leaning towards finished cleaning it and listing it for sale. 1% of me says panther crossmember swap. Any clue what a high mileage Gen 1 lighting is worth?

                          • Man I have no idea. Probably more than you think, maybe not as much? Have you seen what a 87-93 LX Notch that hasn't been completely dorked are going for? Have a look around here for comparison:

I replaced everything with rubber and/or a bearing, and it was good for 20-25k solid miles. Then it started declining but it's still pretty predictable. Moog doesn't mean what it used to. Chinesium is around 200 bucks with a lot of labor for most everything metal that moves. It will probably be cooler before I crawl under it, sadly, but that's where I'll head most likely.

                            • I really should know that I can't have two project cars at one time. I have cancelled my Dragweek registration. The turbo is not getting finished. I worked on the Lightning some I found one of the reasons it doesn't drive great, the ball joints need to be replaced. I didn't check the other front end parts. I think it time to cut loose the time / money suck. So I guess this is like the coming soon ads.

1993 Red Lightning 240k Miles. Other than the genuine 2008 SVT Mustang Cobra wheels it's pretty much stock. It runs good, it drives fair, it needs ball joints. It could use some cosmetic work or call it patina. I have enjoyed working on it but I am ready for someone else carry the torch. What's it worth?
