  • The drivers seat is not shown installed because I cross-threaded the last nut on the last stud I tightened. Completely stripped out the nut and stud. On these the studs are welded to the support brace. To fix it "correctly" I would probably need to remove the carpet, remove the brace weld in a new stud, weld the brace back in and re-install the carpet. Let me think about that for a minute ......... NO. The offending stud (before carpet):

I drilled straight through the stud using progressively larger bits and also drilled a hole through the floor pan under the brace:

Once I was to the point shown above, I busted the stud off with a vice grip. Next step was to take the 1" hole saw and cut an access hole in the floor pan:

Here we see the bottom of the stud. It looked to be well anchored and decently centered, so I used some grade 8 hardware and mounted the seat. The stud head looked to be about 3/4" in diameter and 1/4" thick. I'm guessing the resulting repair is about as strong as the original arrangement.

    • I forgot to mention that the stud that was stripped was the drivers front left - possibly the worst one to have that happen to.

After all that I brushed on some POR15 around the new hole and on the bottom sides of the rust "repair" and we took it for a spin. William is never quite sure he wants the dog to ride with at first, but he eventually warms up to him. He also seemed to enjoy his new floppy hat (we kept loosing ball caps).

Looking like I'll swap out the tank this weekend. Still working the GM recall but I can't wait any longer with Power Tour in 2 weeks. Anyone have any tips on the swap? Thanks,

        • Got the tank, pump and strainer. Also got word from GM that the tank recall was performed on 6/24/94. Not sure why it took them that long to figure it out or if it is even true but it was worth a shot. Unfortunately, the new tank took a hit in shipping. The tab bent over in the pic is supposed to be at about 45 degrees. I hope it will be OK.

              • We got the new tank before noon on Friday! The tab pictured above looks almost identical on the replacement tank. The one with the damaged box was just a little farther in. The replacement tank also had dents in 2 of the sides (along the seams). We decided to use the first one. There was some debate on the interweb about the need to completely remove the rear end. I can definitively tell you that this is the minimum disassembly required to R&R the tank.

                • The only things holding the rear end in are: Brake line, trailing arms, e-brake cables, drive shaft, and torque arm. It took us a little over 2 hours to get it to this point. Tank pics:

                  • We were unable to find any holes in the old tank, but we know that the system did leak from somewhere, so we proceeded to install the new stuff. I'm short on pics here but here is what I have.

New pump and tank sock. Funny story, the pump was $43 and the sock was $30

                    • We replaced the muffler and tail pipes while we were in there. I wanted to get an upgrade on this item but the cars have been bleeding us dry. I got a stock style muffler and tail pipes for $70 from Summit. Old Muffler:

                      • I had been dreading this job after seeing estimates in the 12-14 hour range and I'm happy to report that from start to finish the car was only in the air for 8 hours. Factoring out lunch and a run to town for parts it really only took about 6 hours. Next up was the ACC fuse shorting out issue. This, according to the interwebs, is another know trouble spot. The issue is with the cigarette lighter socket. It's a little hard to see in the picture, but there are 2 tabs near the outside housing of the socket. The upper one you can see quite well, the lower is in contact (possibly intermittent) with the outside of the housing. I pried both tabs in with a screwdriver and reassembled.

                        • While re-assembling the dash, I started to notice a burning smell. I finally figured out what it was when smoke started rolling from the cigarette lighter. After it cooled down, I noticed that the lighter itself was broken in that there was no spring action left. In other words, it would engage but not pop out. As I recall now, the lighter was in the console when we bought it, not in the socket. Now I think we know why.

Tank is done. Ended up using the first tank they sent anyway. Not packed yet, we're leaving a week from today. Still need to change oil and check out the AC.

                              • install an accessory socket that will not accept a lighter, throw lighter into the scrap metal bin and never allow smoking anywhere near the car! I quit smoking several years ago and never looked back! best thing I could have done at the time!
