Re: Redline's 79 Trans Am project

I have 2-78's.. Both were 400 Poncho cars.. One 4 speed, one auto..
74 Firebird is a 4 speed 301. Real dog. Getting a chevy 400 as that is what I have and keeping it 4 speed.
Long ago I had an '83 Firebird I put a 400 sbc into, bored 40 over, ported polished heads, intake, cam and all. That 400 was a blast to drive!

This photo is a '78 TA original black on black-real Bandit SE- by VIN & Cowl tag...400 4spd (no engine or trans. now-long gone...) sold on ebay as you see it to a guy in Montana for $1600... must have wanted it really bad...

While I think the Bandit SE is cool, I couldn't bring myself to own one, even if I could afford it, because I'd want to "improve" it.

John, as others have noted you scored with this car.

IMHO, think twice about changing the color of the 'gut'. Seeing cars with non black/grey/white interiors today is unusual; cleaning up/rehabilitating the 'color' interior may grow on you.

IIRC, these motors can have cooling problems in part due to siamesed cylinder bores; might want to make sure the colling system is well flushed out of any crud/restrictions

Re: Redline's 79 Trans Am project

Working out a plan for the front suspension while the TA is getting the old paint stripped off & the tiny dings smoothed out...

Want to re-do the entire front suspension: Tubular upper and lower, 1 to 1&1/2 inch lowering springs, new sway bar, new shocks... and new brakes to go with it. I'd prefer to find a complete bolt on, but want to keep close to the stock size brakes so I can keep the factory Honeycomb wheels. But, it also has to be budget friendly...

            Suggestions?

Re: Redline's 79 Trans Am project

The only plan for the rear suspension is upgraded sway bar, shocks and probably a rear disc brake conversion (for Chevy 12 bolt).

IMHO - your budget would be better used by replacing the existing rear brake hardware, not upgrading to disc. IIRC, 70% of braking takes place up front

DING DING DING - I agree BIG BINDERS up front will be a very good investment. I haven't been impressed with the rear discs I put on the wagon.

Thanks for the link! This is pretty much exactly what I'm considering.

CC mag did a build on a Z28 a while back, and I know there were articles on suspension upgrading, but I tossed out those issues and haven't gotten to trying to find another copy.

I like the idea of the coilover's in place of kits with lowering springs and shocks. Better adjustability and fine tuning.

The TA is naked... and looking pretty damn good

Paint all stripped, no nasty surprises anywhere, From here we'll fix up a few minor dings, and prime it & coat in Flat black for a while. Once that is all done and back together, I'll do the front suspension set up.

WOW - beyond great! Looks like an excellent start. Now if you will pardon me giving advice - use Hot Rod Black or similar satin / flat black real paint and not primer. The wagon ran in epoxy primer for years but the surface does degrade over time.
