Aluminum melts at 1223 degrees, deforms at above 200 degrees and ignites at 1600 degrees - and at full song, your motor will be spitting out exhaust (laden with fuel) at 1600 degrees. I beg you to reconsider your material choice. Titanium is a good option for your criteria.

            • Watch the down pipe. Steel starts glowing at 900 degrees

              Ferrous metal

              ----- ---- Color

400 -- 752 -- Red heat, visible in the dark
474 -- 885 -- Red heat, visible in the twilight
525 -- 975 -- Red heat, visible in the daylight
581 -- 1077 - Red heat, visible in the sunlight
              700 -- 1292 - Dark red
              800 -- 1472 - Dull cherry-red
              900 -- 1652 - Cherry-red
              1000 - 1832 - Bright cherry-red
              1100 - 2012 - Orange-red

*and no one knows it all, we all are learning. I'm pretty competent at metal but I'm not an expert - and the more I learn, the more I learn how little I really know.

I know this already and I am not concerned. The tubing came off of a much more serious car than mine and it never had an issue.

The car has gotten to a point where it won't run much at all, leaving the tubing to remain fairly cool, considering its job. It is also rather thick, close to 1/8".

You can see some of one of the two versions of the exhaust that I picked up from him, peaking up over the passenger valve cover. Now, I agree, titanium would be better and if I had titanium money, much more than just the downpipe would be made out of it.

                        • Well, the flat hood mold is done but, not without some issues.

                          • Thought you might dig this. I see this car at a restaurant I frequent and thought of you. The owner is an older guy and it seems to be his daily driver. It looks like the day it was made so I'm guessing it gets ALL the services. No clue on the drivetrain but likely a 5.0/AOD?

Nope. Coastal NC cars driven by tall old men. Here, unless the car lives right AT the beach they tend to hold up really well. Mutt has zero rust underneath the paint or on the undercarriage and he didn't have an easy life. Truck was from Florida and he's rust-free and ME's 200K mile HHR has none either. Vanna was from the Myrtle Beach area and she's rust-free, too. Since moving here 18 years ago I've come to wonder why I ever messed with rusty cars instead of coming here for project material. It's worth the trip!
