Made a hole so I can route the transmission lines and battery cable inside the frame rail, keeping it away from the exhaust (yet to be routed). Making sure everything fits...

Shock jigs were made at ride height (shock 2/3 extended). I should have material by the end of the week to make the mount.

Hope to have the body back on it soon, then I can check all the fitments then finish all the floor pans and wheel tubs.

Very happy so far. Cutting the rear frame rails for wider tires was a chore, but well worth it I think (and more importantly - so does she!)

                • Over the Holiday break I took a little time off from the '40 to work on Dad's Falcon.

Off with the single 4-barrel (that will end up on the 302 for the '40) and on with the tunnel ram! Why? Not sure....but it looks cool! The little 289 likes to rev and it should be ok with the 4 speed / 4.11 gear. It's tuned the best we can in the garage...will need to wait a few month's for the test drive...bummer. I just wish Dad was still around to enjoy it...but I'm sure he's smilin'

                  • But that's a 260 - says so right there on the fender! I had a friend years ago who ran a 289 w/tunnel ram and 2x4s - it worked well at high RPMs but took a lot of tweaking to get it there. What carbs are you running?

                    • Ha! - it had a 260 in it when we first built it...

Dad only drove it a few times before he passed, but it was never "finished" (are they ever?). In 2017, my wife and I decided to get it done the way I think he would have wanted, but could not do at the time. I took the crankshaft from the 260, put it in a 302 block from my grandfather's (his dad's) old Torino, and used some parts from my old engines to make the 289. Kinda felt like 3 generations into one? It's 9.7:1, with good rods, Weisco pistons, Windsor Jr. heads and a solid roller. We drive it (just about) anywhere, including the Woodward Dream Cruise and local parades. I drive it to work during the summer when the weather's nice.

The carbs are 450's, so I'm hoping it will not be too bad. It idles fine and revs good after we put in some larger squirters and adjusted the timing. We'll see how it goes. I'd like to make it work. Not looking for all out performance, just decent drivability and the cool factor.

Sorry for the long winded response, but I'm pretty proud to have his old car and the memories of us building it together.

                          • I did get plenty of shop time over the break, so I was able to get some things done on her '40.

Finished boxing in the frame mount for the shock crossmember. Added a cage nut so I can also use this as a mounting point for the body.

A while back I had to adjust the crossmember to clear the driveshaft. Well...I ended up raising the rearend another inch soo... after running a string from the trans to the yoke I had to move the top of the hoop up. I decided if I'm going to move it, make sure this time! Unfortunately that meant I also needed to make the rear driveshaft tunnel larger. Ended up making a "die" out of wood so I could properly form the tunnel.

I also added some tubing to help brace the crossmember center to the frame.

Next was getting the shifter put into place. I needed to raise the seat 1/2 inch, but the wife is happy with the placement.

She came out one afternoon and we completely removed all fabric from the rear seat. Rubber gloves and masks were in order. It was disgusting! This allowed me to mark and cut for the new wheel tubs.

New wheel tubs installed. I moved them out 3/8" from the frame and I still have plenty of tire clearance.

Pretty happy with the progress. We will lose a little bit of the back seat but not much. Should be plenty of room for the mutts...or me since they will probably ride shotgun!

Now it's back to work so I can pay for all this fun!

                              • I've been putting it off, but the rear driver side inner wheel-well needed some attention behind the new wheel tub.

It had a character line that added some strength and I was not sure how to duplicate it. After talking to a friend, I came up with this idea. It worked out pretty good after using some "light" heat ad hammer to form it around the tube.

I have some custom panels coming for the trunk, so in the meantime I thought I'd play around with the front sway bar. Need to drill some holes and bend a power steering line slightly, but other than that all good!
