  • Daughter's 68 C 10

This started back in March 2019. A friend of mine called and said he had a 66 Chevy truck he wanted to give away. Well after he sent me pictures, I informed him it was a 68. I told him I would be interested in it. He told me to come get it. So we did. When we got to Donnie's house it had 2 flat tires but the air tank on the ramp truck handled it fine. Along with the winch to pull it up on it with. As we where loading it Donnie handed my daughter the original tilte and keys along with all the papers his dad got with it when he bought it new in 68. It has 63,000 miles on the straight 6 engine and 3 speed transmission which both are going by bye for a fresh V-8 and 700-R4 combo. I used the ramp truck to haul it home and it never knew it was back there.
My daughter has claimed it and so the building of it is under way. She wants it ready for the 2020 HRPT! That maybe pushing it though.
So any way we have started working on it and have got a short bed frame for it to convert it over. The new frame had disc brakes dual exhaust and power steering already installed. $800.00 for it was a good deal I thought. The V-8 was given to me and had it completely rebuilt with 12,000 mile warrinty. 700-R4 is rebuilt by local guy. We have done complete rear end rebuild with new bearings, seal, brake shoes wheel cylinders and all new hard lines and rubber lines back and front. New motor munts and cab and raditor mounts. Got a completely rebuilt 71 C10 tilt steering column and a 3 spoke Corvette wheel for it. New hood and fender trip and letters.
My daughter & grandson have even help with it some. We turned the droms and rotors and rebuilt the calipers. Putting a 19 Gallon 'NO LIMIT' engineering gas tank between the rear frame rails with new lines.

All the brakes are done from rear to front. I finally got the right rear rubber hose after 3 tries. I had to grind the front passenger side caliper down to get the hoses to work.

Stock 71/72 disc brake trucks had the hard lines ran to the front of the A-arms where the 70 back trucks with drums ran them in the backside. I had to grind the caliper down to spin the banjo to fit. Now the hose want get pinched off.

I got the factory tilt column all done and the 3 spoke wood steering wheel hub on. I took the factory Ram Horn exhaust manifolds and cleaned them good with wire brush wheel then sprayed them with caliper black paint.

All the new brake lines and fuel lines are ran to the front end and waiting on engine, transmission and the cab setting to hook everything up. New 18" Boss wheels & tires are also mounted it's back to a roller.

I really like the wheel/tire setup.

Well we started the motor yesterday for the first time. We got the old LWB frame inside and lifted the cab off it and rolled it back outside. Then rolled the new SWB over to it and will start the cleaning and welding on the cab. The drivers side rocker is the worst part. I have to get it replaced along with the rear cab corner. The rest will be just cut out enough to repair it. I was surprised how well the floor looked under it.

We finally got it cranked. After 2 starters and 3 batteries.

Well we are well on the way to getting this truck back together again. I've been very busy on it. I have until Dec 31,2019 to get out of my friends shop. I hope to have it done are at least drive able by then. I got the passenger side rocker & cab corner in it and now the drivers side. The passenger side was the easy one. Seeing how I have never welded in replacement sheet metal I had my good friend Jesse come over and set me up. He retired welder instructor at the vocational school here. He has fixed several trucks and cars so he knows what to do. Just changing the wire size from .030 to .024 made a huge difference in how it welded. Go back in a bit to start on the drivers side.

Did the same, went from .035/.030 to .023, makes a difference! Even my daughter welds her derby car doors shut.

Picked up the drivers side backing plate and battery tray yesterday at the toy drive for our truck club. Going over to the shop here in a bit and start looking at installing it. Wish me luck!.

I wasn't planning on doing as much as I did because I feel like crap but I made some good progress on the drivers side rocker install. I got all the old metal out and grinded everything down good to start in the morning welding the backing plate back in. Hopefully I'll feel better by morning but I'm not counting on it. I burned all the old spot welds out and air chiseld the old rocker and backing plate out.
