We left the passenger side still stuck to the head figuring the machinist could separate those. Next up was removal of pistons and crankshaft. No real surprises here. The ring ridge was not horrible and the bearings looked really good.

The sludge at the bottom of the oil pan was about a half inch thick:

Once we got there, we took a quick look and cracks in at least 2 cylinders:

In addition to that issue the valves looked to be very worn. Sunk down in the seats and the tips are very close to the retainers. Good thing we bought a parts car. I consulted my Cadillac expert (my good friend Paul) and he dove into his pile of books to find out that the heads are side to side specific and that there is an early and late 1956 part number for each side. Time to dig into the parts car. First step, clean it up a little.

Disassembly:
This is the fuel pump rod and it is rusted solid into the block:
Much cleaner under the valve covers than Annie

The heads appear to be the same part number. The -7 is supposed to indicate July.

Heads and exhaust manifolds are off and apart. The head bolts came out nice and easy and only one manifold bolt was rounded. We ground the head off that one and pried the manifold off and after that the bolt was not even finger tight.

Outside of the rust from sitting with valves open the heads look pretty decent. Exhaust manifolds look good and the rocker shaft assemblies look in better than the stuff that came off Annie. We dropped off the "fresh" parts at the machinist last Saturday and anxiously await the results of cleaning and testing for cracks. Once we have a green light there, we'll take the crank in for machining (different place). After pics of the parts car harvest:

Here are some shots that provide clues as to why the motor would not turn over:
Number 1 Cylinder - Valve was stuck open

I love this car!
If I had room on the trailer, this one would have come home with me from Indiana.
Fresh from CA with all trim except rear bumper. I didn't find a single rust hole in it. Engine is locked up
Probably for the best, I have too many irons in the fire as it is.

The heads and block check out. The seats in the heads are in tough shape though and will need replacement seats installed in the intake and exhaust. Looks like we will have a set of valves we can use though. Need to drop off the crank Monday and shop for parts.Chris - HRPT Long Haul 03, 04, 05, 13, 14, 15,16 & 18
