  • I needed to build a couple of calliper mounts out of 3/8” steel. Very simple mounts 2”x 8” with 4 31/64” holes. I wanted to remove the mill scale from them and a quick search on YouTube provided the answer … vinegar .
I soaked the pieces for 24 hrs and the scale wipes off with a rag , no scrubbing at all. I figured that some of you lot already know of this method but I wanted to share it with those that don’t.

ID:	1335476 Since I had the front suspension torn apart I thought it would be a good idea to replace the upper ball joints, they didn’t really need replacing but what the hell . I ordered a pair and some other odds and ends from Rockauto. They arrived today, they’re Moog pieces. I’m thinking Moog changed their design for some reason. The boxes have the same part number and overall they look the same but then they’re not . I’ll install them , I hate it when crap like this happens.

      • They probably found a way to make them fit more than one application, or a way to manufacture them more easily or some such. Bottom line is that car parts, like everything else in the world, are changing. My iPhone was top of the line 3 years ago and now nobody will even steal it.

        • The old design is in 3 pieces. The joint , a rubber cover and a tin shroud that hold the rubber cover in place . The new design is in one piece and has a smaller rubber cover integrated into the joint itself. A much better design, funny thing is that the grease nipple isn’t included.

Sure they’ve been taken out of the package but never been used . Well I’ll be that guy soon. All because I ordered the wrong parts by mistake of course. Like the “rear” 2000 Camaro brake pads I ordered instead of the front and the “rear” 2000 Corvette rotors I received instead of the front that I meant to order. It’s just as well because I should have ordered 2000 Camaro rotors which I have now . The vette rotors are 13” and the Camaro’s are 12”. In my zest to have BIG brakes I overlooked the fact that they’ll have to fit inside my wheels. So anyhow I got them all slapped together tonight sans brake pads (new ones arriving Friday) . Hopefully I ordered the correct ones …

              • I sometimes think that I subconsciously order the wrong parts just so I can add to my Rockauto magnet collection.

                  • Well I’m very happy to say that today we hit the road for the first time since S10 2.0 went under the knife (wheel of death) . The only sour note was a squeak coming from the front brakes. Besides that I’m very happy. The Allstar Performance 28” rad in combo with the twin Spal fans ($20 a piece) from Amazon warehouse deals kept things under 180 on a beautiful day … two thumbs up . I only got a three day insurance permit because I didn’t know what laid ahead but if squeaky brakes is all then I’m golden.

                    • No more squeaking , turns out that the caliper mounting brackets that I made placed the calipers a little too close to the rotors . The rotors were just barely touching the stainless brake pad slides. A couple of hours work and we're done ... fixed . I'm going to enjoy this little truck for the summer and keep an eye out for an Explorer 8.8 for a winter project .

                          • I’ve been driving and enjoying this thing , it really does pay to listen to those who have gone and done what you haven’t. Case in point was my cam selection for this little 4.8 . I went with the Elgin Sloppy Stage 1 cam over the ever popular Stage 2. I picked up some knowledge listening to Richard Holdener and Matt Hapel who had a chat on YouTube. Both shared the same feeling that the Stage 1 would be the best choice for a 4.8 but most would choose the Stage 2 because of the choppy idle . I’m glad I listened because this 4.8 pulls hard …… I like . I haven’t been abusing the truck because of the tired 7.5 out back , so cruising around for the summer it is .

                              Awesome !

                              How about a current pic?

My brother has a red 4X4 S10, I think a stock 1997 and people try to buy it wherever he goes.

                              • I don't know if I've shared this with you guys or not (I'm old) but I'm sure a few of you have purchased these aluminum overflow tanks off Amazon. They come with a real hokey mounting bracket/hose clamp arrangement. In looking for a better solution I found these mounts also on Amazon. They are meant to be a rollbar mount for off road lights and they fit these tanks perfectly. I used these tanks on both the S10 and the Cougar. I just thought I'd share this idea with you all.
