Checked fuel sync today. Factory setting is supposed to be 0. Performance builds are typically +6 to +8. We did good setting it with the volt meter as ours was -1 to +1. We reset and Judd said it ran better.
Later he called and said it was running horrible. It sounds like it did when Judd didn't get the #1 exhaust rocker on correctly. So we gotta figure out what the hell is the matter. This valvetrain apparently hates me. Just when I think I have it figured out, it goes full stupid. I hate cars.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Today we pop off a valve cover and find the #1 exhaust rocker just lying there. Broken rocker bolt. Great. Just what I wanted to do on a Sunday afternoon. The bottom section was still stuck in the head so I drilled it and hammered a small square drive bit into it (because I have zero use for them and every bit kit contains a half dozen of them) and manage to extract the busted section. Wheeew. Bullet dodged. Closer inspection revealed the bolt was cross threaded at some point and was likely the reason for the failure. We noticed this when we were building the engine the first time, but it didn't seem like a big deal. I guess the last time we had the rockers off we got the bolt crooked again. We cleaned up the threads with a tap and put it all back together. "A cross thread may be good as a lock nut" but it has no place holding rocker arms on an engine!

It was totally a previous owner thing. I knew we had one that was trouble, but couldn't remember which one. This rocker is right under a giant wiring harness and is hard to see. We just got it crooked and that kept the pedestal from seating square and flush on the head. It probably rocked just enough to fatigue the bolt and finally went pow.Life is short. The main problem we are having with this thing is it wanting to die coming to a stop. This is actually a hold-over issue from the last engine. I figured it was just a worn out engine problem and I guess it sort of is. I suspected decel fuel cut was the problem, starving the engine for fuel, but had no way to verify. After some email to tech support, I finally got HPTuners to log stuff correctly (whoo hoo) and discovered that it was not the lack of fuel that was the problem, it was the lack of air. I logged IAC position and was able to see that it is completely closed on decel and stays closed until the engine dies, or until you blip the throttle. We swapped a different IAC in and it behaved the same. Our IAC is open quite a bit at idle (100 on a scale of 0-180) and this is probably caused by dirty or worn TB parts. Factory spec is 30-60, so ours is open quite a bit more than it should be.
After some digging, I discovered a procedure to set the base idle on a Magnum. Basically you remove the metal plug covering the throttle stop screw, and plug the IAC feed hole and then turn the screw to set the base idle without the IAC factoring in. This makes the IAC strictly an "air adder" to maintain the programmed idle. This should keep the IAC from being able to close and kill the engine.

dirty maybe, but worn TB is what, the shaft? That'd make it suck un-metered air I guess, but as I remember worn throttle shafts, it wanted to idle high. That's been 30 plus years ago so I could be remembering it wrong. I like the plan to jack up the base idle idea though.Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.

I guess the TB will be a moot point because Judd just showed up with one of these.

Oh my gosh this thing is driving me nuts.
It runs good sort of. I mean it seems to make more power than before and keeps pulling when the old motor was done.
But it just doesn't seem crisp like I think it should. Throttle response is sorta muddy.
We set the base idle on Saturday and that seemed to be ok.
While we were messing with that we noticed it would pop through the intake on quick throttle stabs. Rolling into the throttle was fine but quick stabs made it pop. From what I have read I think this is a symptom of the fuel sync being off. Ok, so we fired up the scanner and the sync was at +8. We decide to go back to square one and line up all the marks like the factory manual says to. Fire it up turn on the scanner and it is at -16 and runs no different. Holy cow, -16! It should be about 0 if set to factory specs. It still pops. We try an alternate method and end up at +14. Runs the same-ish so we determine the sync may not be as critical as we thought. Seems awful weird that it is so far off. It is making me question the accuracy of the harmonic balancer TDC marks, because if it is off, we probably have the intermediate shaft a tooth off. That would jack up the fuel timing significantly. We speculate that the pop might be a lean condition and it might need more transition fuel (accel pump shot) we increase it a couple of times and it does nothing to help. I reflash the original tune back to it and then try to start it. Click click click. Battery is dead. Great. I put the battery charger on and wondered if maybe it had too much lifter preload causing the valves to not fully seat or something. Stabbing at ideas in the dark.
Since the battery needed time, I decide to go in all the way and add my 0.020" shims to the 0.035" shims that were already in there. I popped the valve covers off and was greeted by a couple of rockers that have a lot of lash. More shim might not be right so I decide to go back to square one and take all the shims out. I did this and the engine had no compression. Nice. It took me a bit to figure that out. I wasn't sure if it was valve adjustment related or if it didn't write the tune back properly since rhe battery was so weak. I knew how it ran with 0.035" shims so I put 0.020" shims in. Fired it up and it had loud popping thru TB. So we went back to the 0.035" shims. Reset fuel sync to 0 and Judd drove it home. He said it ran terrible and was making awful popping noises. I get home shortly thereafter and determine the problem lies with #8. So tomorrow I will drive it on 7 cylinders back to the shop and pull the passenger valve cover to see what is going on.
One thing is for sure: I am really unhappy with the link bar lifters. They are noisy and I think some of the plungers are sticking down. (Hence the rockers with a lot of lash) I ordered a new set of stock ones and set of adjustable rocker arms. I didn't want to have to do that, but we gotta get this stupid thing fixed.

Nah. Haven't done anything to it. Rocker does not move and there was no noise like the lifter was eating a lobe so maybe the lifter is just toast.
The pushrod had witness marks up on it like it had been going down inside the lifter. Normally there is nothing that is close enough to touch the pushrod to leave that sort of mark. I will prob drain coolant and start taking stuff apart this evening.Last edited by BBR; December 15, 2020, 10:02 AM.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.
