  • Okay everyone can jump on the wuss. I kept hemming and hawing over bolting the transmission and the bellhousing together. You may remember there was a half inch discrepancy in dimensions. I had options, but selected the money way out. That's the down side. The up side is I selected the money way out.

Remember I used to be employed in the government, double speak is easy!

Anyway, I ended up buying an adapter plate from Vintage Metalworks. Dave Farwell is the business owner and chief fabricator. And a very knowledgeable person especially regarding S10 T5 transmissions and the care and feeding of them in hot rods. And he's also an engineer!

So today I got the adapter for the Whatever project and the first thing is this thing is HOT ROD PORN.

Pretty isn't it? Best part is that no modifications to the transmission and the bellhousing are needed, only the bolt holes in the transmission needed to be drilled to half inch plus a little bit. So here's what it looks like in the car.

So go ahead, make fun of me. I'm secure in the knowledge that I can look at the transmission and the bellhousing together and it's done.

Next of course is the needed clutch disc. That's coming from Waco Texas in the near future Made to work again with no modifications necessary.

    • If it's on the budget nothing wrong with out sourcing a few parts.

I am the complete opposite I have a very limited "no strings attached" budget but as long as it comes out of that account she is not allowed to say ANYTHING.

Getting line items added to the family budget is not as easy, my one claim to fame is the Dragweek line that covers registration, motel rooms, food and fuel, for a week!

          • I have a simple Financial Planning......
Retirement Checks get deposited into Blue Check Book. Monthly payments are paid, raining day fund gets transferred, and Balance goes into the "Alfred E. Neuman" investments (Mad Money Fund).
When this Fund nears Zero, just wait for the 1st of the Month........

We have a similar deal. Part of my SS check goes into the family account and the rest into the car account. I have a credit card for each account and sometimes the car account has a carryover balance from month to month so I pay a little interest but I'm usually able to pay it off at the end of the month. ME's cool with this and we don't hide purchases from each other.

              • I hauled scrap to pay for my derby addiction.
Then I needed a truck, 3 ft torch, gas chop saw... etc.
became “full time”... then my body again screamed “ENOUGH”

                • Maggie does the banking so she knows exactly what I spend, just after the fact. And big purchases are actually scheduled. It's interesting to see that we all have different but similar methods to not spend bill money on our hobby. Right now I'm waiting for the new contract with NYS to go into effect, as there's about 2 years of retroactive pay including for retirees who were on the books for that time period. I'm guessing a couple of grand aft taxes. That's my car fund...

John - If you haven't picked up on this, Dave (he's Italian mix too) and I were coworkers and friends back in his EPA days before he went to the State of New York. We did a lot of projects together and I miss him now that he's too far away to swap labor.

Dave - John is an engineer at Ford and a really great guy. He knows more about tire rolling resistance than anyone should have to know (don't know if he's still in that line of work). If we were all still in MI I bet we'd hang out.

                      • You give me too much credit - but after 21 years at Ford and 5 at Honda - I have learned a few things about how the OEM vehicle company works. Just enough to stay employed - hopefully for another 4 years or so. I'd love to spend more time hanging out with like minded folks in the shop and getting neat stuff accomplished. It's funny how some folks look at me sideways when I say I'm not a sports fan, not even a hockey fan, don't watch football, not in a bowling league or golf league - yada yada -- I'd much rather play in the shop and get something neat accomplished than sit on the couch and yell at a bunch of overpaid guys on the TV.

Speaking for myself and Dan, we agree. Tom Brady, he's a first base man or something, right? My heroes when I was younger were guys like AJ Watson, those guys were what racing was all about. Build the car, tune the engine and chassis. Drivers were a dime a dozen. Good mechanics made or broke the race car.

                          • Finally! I was back in the garage today. Made a drag link. Might have to make another down the road. Once the final ride height is set, I will see if the drag link is parallel to the axle. Then I can adjust if necessary.

Working on final engine mounts. I'm going to use side block mounts with bushed ends for some compliance. Final setup will use a transmission mount, also stock type, same idea, some compliance. The x-member for it will also add some triangulation to the center of the frame. And include a driveshaft safety loop or two.

Now to find room for an alternator. I'm also reassessing the front suspension. I was leaning towards somewhat traditional with the buggy spring, but it's heavy and uses up some valuable real estate up front. As the front and rear shocks are the same, less the coilover stuff, it's not really a big deal. Just add a panhard bar. Remove the suicide mount. Gain room for the radiator and maybe even a fan...

Of course that means I now have a spare front spring setup if I were to build a replica sprint car to use up more of my spare parts!

                            • Opinion requested. So just was staring at the Whatever project and the thought occurred to me that I might as well start planning the gauge layout. I know, don't just stand there staring at it, get twirling wrenches! After perusing different gauges from a lot of the manufacturers, it dawned on me that I haven't a clue about current gauges. I'll list what I plan on having for gauges and maybe the denizens of Bangshift will give me guidance on and experiences with the new stuff available. The last vehicle I built that needed gauges was the first Mini. The second Mini is going to reuse them if I can find them.

So the Whatever project is getting electric gauges for sure for voltmeter (I know, rather obvious), water temperature, and speedometer (the S10 T5 has the electronic speedometer sender). Possible electric gauge for oil pressure. I really like wires instead of tubes going to the dash.

So what say yee masters of mechanical mayhem, what brand is the least problematic? Best looking? Cost is reasonable, not necessarily the cheapest? BTW I'm still trying to use a mechanical tach, because I have a neat old SW 10k salvaged from a test tube stirrer.

                              • COST !!!!
I bauked at all electric gauge sets when I seen the price difference building the Indy Racer. I might regret this later if I have to remove the whole dash in the future as the Water Temp Gauge is mechanical.....
