18000 psi of expansion and it does a fair job IF you have an open side so it can move.
In the ditch it will crack the rock, but it won't just come out without additional hammertime festivities.

I had a "guy" come over to blast. He said that his insurance won't allow blasting within 300' of an existing structure. NO BUENO!!

I might know why that's a rule. I must have been in the under 12 category of life and we had a guy come blast cottonwood stumps out of a road that we were building in a canyon, basically the road bisected the canyon and at the bottom was a swamp... err.. wetland before wetlands were discovered... so we (me as long distance, I thought, observer) were blasting these 6' diameter stumps out of the ground. I'd already been entertained by the falling of the tree - it landed in the swamp and disappeared... so the guy loaded the stump and we observed from the top of this canyon which was 80-100' above the blast site and maybe 150' horizontally from the blast zone. Guy loads it hot but fails to note a few things. 1) that waterlogged soil does not compress or blow out, 2) that cottonwood stumps have roots in swamp - read, no holding power, so 3) he blew the stump and it landed on the opposite canyon rim - it cleared the canyon rim by at least 20' and landed quite nicely 300 or so feet from us.... yes, had it popped our way, we could have gotten squished.... but did we care? oh hell no - that was the coolest thing ever and started my career in pipe bombs...

Lot's of other stuff going on around here. I did finally get a jackhammer rented to help loosen up the busted rock in the ditch so it could be removed.
The ditch has been inspected and approved without wavers. The inspector noted that was a LOT of rock to remove without blasting...Oh well, it's done now.

Rain has halted the dirt work for now. but the conduit, fiber, and water line are in the hole, covered with 8" of dirt and marked with a big red "buried powerline tape" waiting final grade along with all of the topsoil from the initial excavation.

next task, a trip to the in-laws in Indiana for Thanksgiving YAY!

note to self- DON'T FORGET EARPLUGS

      Happy Thanksgiving Y'ALL

          Indeed!

The TV is ALWAYS blasting on some dumb show, people either sleeping or screaming over the TV.

Oh, yeah don't turn it down or change the channel! M.I.L. goes from snoring to I was watching that every time.

          Sensory overload to be sure.

We're traveling too - should be fun, right now, no snow but wed-friday? hmmm they say no but I don't trust them at all.

We're waiting on the concrete bid...

fiber? guessing starlink isn't available? they're putting in fiber in my neighborhood but I cannot imagine why I'd ever hook up to it (irony is the neighborhood I lived in near Seattle didn't have fiber, just DSL - but out here in the sticks, it's coming)....

UGH concrete! Here, IMI gets $175 / yard delivered. +$7 / yard to add fiber reinforcement. Plus forming, rebar, and labor.

No snow in the forecast for us either, not holding my breath.
Lows in the 20's and chance of rain so it could be nasty on our way home.

The fiber in the ditch is future proofing. The phone co-op drops it in free whenever you run new electric service to a building.
BTW, the fiber service at my house is quite a bit cheaper than Starlink, It became available here around 6-7 years ago. Rural area grants and such.
Fiber has been great! Much more reliable and faster than the crappy DSL we had before. We could only get 1M on the DSL service.
I will most likely run a cat-6 drop from my house for service to the shop. I'm on the fringe of the wireless router on it's best day, once the metal siding goes on it won't work at all.

every year is a crap shoot - there have been some when it's a solid sheet of ice, others when snowblind isn't just a Styx song, and yet others when it's absolutely fantastic... so far, seems it might be a bit dicey for the first 60 miles but the other 600 should be fine.

because hillside, our concrete is a bit more complex... 10' wall, #5 rebar every 6"....

                        OUCH!
That's about how mine started. The first bid was supposed to be similar. 70' long wall from 10' tall stepping down to 7'.
He never did get me a price.

the second contractor, suggested sliding out 8' from the embankment and just pouring a regular slab. It cost me 4' of building width.
I have a lot of rock in my dug out embankment. Big rocks and layers of shale like stone. I will rip rap it and hope for the best

I put a small shed in a couple of years back. 12x20 just for storage, mostly. Wanted it on some sort of stable base, not just gravel. Looked into concrete, >$6,000. Nonstarter! Had a brain fart, looked into screw piers. Approximately $3k installed. Had them set so the 6x6 cross beams were a foot above ground. Built in some 2x6s for bracing, and had a neighbor contractor infill with 1 inch gravel. The town building inspectors all came out to see it, as they had never seen someone use those screw piers like this before. Each corner pier can hold a minimum of 2500 pounds each, the 8 inner piers can hold a minimum of 3500 pounds each. Was it necessary? No! But that shed ain’t going anywhere…

And it’s screwed down by 18 of those modern lag bolts, 12 inches long. The inspectors agreed that if we ever get a tornado my shed should stay in place. Of course it could get leveled by falling trees, but that’s the price we pay for wooded land…

My shop is all metal (trusses and all) and it's a huge Faraday cage. I can get cell near the pedestrian door but walk toward the inside of the shop and it drops. I just live with it but it's an unexpected price to pay for a hurricane-resistant building.

Just a Heads up on "Fiber Mesh" added to concrete.
It's only real function is for Surface Spider Cracking, and high traffic use (warehouse forklifts). It really does not get you a Stronger 3 Point Bearing Break Strength.

Also if you have pets, it is NOT Good for their paws. Tiny bits will be working out of the concrete forever.
