Re: 1989 Mustang, Driver / Drag / LSR

One of the other things on the list is to switch to an electric fan. I got a fan out of a 4.6 t-bird, and an Alt. out of a 94-95 v6 mustang I hope its a 130 amp. I have been doing a lot of reading on how to install the 3rd gen Alt in a Fox body. some say just cut off the block and put a new conector on. Others say you need to ran a new 4 ga. wire to the Battery. Anyone done this before? I don't want to cause a fire but if I don't need to run new wires I really don't want to. Once I am get the Alt. right I will tackle the fan This will require some new brackets and wireing whats the best way to wire the fan?

Maxton report, made 2 runs Saturday best of 137.6 was off about 1 mph from the April meet don't know why may have been the stock spoiler i added back the 138.5 had no spoiler. Sunday I removed the fan ran 139.3 after a long cool down and the kitty litter shuffle I added $20 of 100 unleaded bumped the timing up 1.5 and taped over the cowl and ran 140.24461! Goal met!

next on the list for this car is getting the trac loc fixed (I went back a looked I have been saying this for a while) to make drag racing more fun, and I need to add the electric fan I am going to claim removing the fan gave me 2 mph but some of that could have been air.....

Thanks Dave! I was in pre stage when you made the record pass and I was shocked when I head the speed, it seemed effortless! and sounded like you were granny shifting?

Well I rebuilt the trac loc and its much better on the street. Took it to the 1/8 at dunn benson, only made 9 passes did not want to really hot lap it b/c its been running at the top of normal on the highway. I guess its b/c the coolant is VERY RUSTY, and I am also missing the air dam. Best: 60 ft 2.27, 1/8 et 9.36, mph 76.60. So it really did not run any better than last time. I guess I need to learn how to drive or a least get some better tires.

Went to Dunn-Benson 1/8 Dragstrip last night and had a great time. Hope to be able to do that more often. Did not change anything from the last time I went I think the cooler weather helped some. Most of my passes were still in the 9.30s but I did make two passes were I was able to get out (bog) of the hole. Quickest: 2.22 9.12 77.61. Fastest: 2.26 9.15 78.06. Next time I am going to try some diffrent tires. In hopes of getting my 60' down.

So - you get a bog when you get traction, or all the time?

                          Holley?

Have you changed discharge nozzle size or cam? 30cc or 50cc pump?

What rpm are you staging at? If you're primary pump linkage is tight - you maybe half way through the pump shot if you're staged with the throttle open.
There's always something new to learn.

The bog is when the tires (almost worn out and starting to dry rott!) do not spin, Its still EFI, 98 gt40p motor 92 HO cam and some bolt ons, have not done anything to it after I put it together at the a couple years ago. I stage with it just above idle I watch the lights so not sure about rpm.

I had a similar situation with my '90, better traction = bog off the line.... thought that was really weird with EFI, didn't have a way to tune the stock computer. All I could figure was that we were finding holes in the calibration - need a way to calibrate that part of the speed load map where the factory never did.

Megasquirt? Since you alread have EFI - it would be an easy transition - and you'd then be able to tune to your hearts content.

John, I am pretty happy with the stock tune. I not saying the "bog" is a bad thing. I think I need more pratice at the Strip, the hot shoes talk about the "ekkk" you get when the tires are just on the edge of traction, I normally dont get that. The way I see it the motor is spining at X rpm the the clutch is a 0 and the tires are at 0. Dump the clutch and the clutch = motor, therefore tires spin or motor stalls. I guess its the slip of the clutch that makes the perfect launch. But I also think thats real hard to do with street tires and 3.08 gears. One of these days I would like to be able to lauch at 5k rpms and slip the clutch enough to make the tires hook. Nothing like trying to get a 5 speed to lauch like a high stall auto!
